Been thinking about it, it could also be the starch we use as a sizing agent.....

Are you soaking before washing to make sure they're fully wetted out before going into the wash and running an extra rinse on them? I've found these thicker/ heavier fabrics need a bit more water and time compared to more regular stuff.

I vote indigo. I’ve had some heavily dyed indigo shirts have a similar scent first few washes

@pechelman I use the denim setting on my Miele washing machine, I think it should have been fully wet before washing.

Does anyone know how many washes it takes before the smell fades away? Thanks all to those who have replied above and happy to be part of the IH family

Did you wear them a long time before their first wash? If so it may be that mildew has saturated the cotton to the level that it won’t come out. I’ve you have ever shipped vintage denim then some of those pieces have that smell, despite thorough laundering.

@neph93 It certainly smells much less to the severe degree of smell that thrifted clothes have. I washed them once normally before wearing once I bought them

@mikebarhoot I am not too sure which detergent it is! but the washing machine should be relatively clean. As in the smell is specific to this IH and not with other jeans
