Leaving your shirt buttoned in the wash is the issue, imo. Surprising that they were weak enough to pop off, though.

@sabergirl with the weight of the shirt I did wonder if I had made a mistake buttoning the shirt partially. Next wash I‘ll leave them unbuttoned

FWIW I machine wash everything unbuttoned and have only had to reinforce uhf work shirt buttons years later.

Next wash unbuttoned it is. Let’s see what that does 👍🏽 And now back to enjoying this beauty of a shirt.

            Use it or lose it.

The post wash fit pic I promised

A bit shorter now and more conformed to my body which is a big plus.

              Use it or lose it.

We're supposed to wash it inside out. Buttoning it seems the only way that's possible

I mean I just turn it inside out, like the sleeves, y’know? Never really give it much thought, personally.

Sorry @weftyarn that this has happened. I have passed the feedback on but I would definitely not button your shirt up when washing it, as @sabergirl said, just inside out with the sleeves pulled through. I always unbutton every button on any shirt (not just IH) as a super vigorous washing machine can cause all sorts of stress on the buttons

@AdamC no worries at all mate, will definitely go unbuttoned next time 🙂

Still I think it’s worth thinking about how the work shirt button threads fail so easily when everything else on these pieces is made to never ever break no matter what you throw at it.

Not just through washing but also through regular wear like it happened on my 307

I mean this in the most positive way 😉

@weftyarn Absolutely man and appreciate the feedback, it has all been passed on to work out if there is/what is the issue and work on improving 🙂

Just a random thought concerning the thread being used to sew on buttons…Is there a dyneema like thread that could be used? Some fishing braids are damn near unbreakable. Probably overkill…

Seems to me like the issue isn’t thread quality so much as how many passes through the button holes are made.

The 397 is my only non-western IH shirt (I am addicted to snap buttons). I also wash inside out with all buttons fastened in a Samsung front loader on gentle cycle with the coldest wash setting. I am going to go as long as possible before laundering this shirt. I just love wearing it but I am leaving a trail of indigo everywhere!

We’ve had it confirmed from Japan that washing shirts with snaps or buttons done up is higher risk than needed, as sabergirl says there is an easy way to turn your shirt inside out without the buttons being done up. Care guidelines will be fine tuned to clarify.

I’ll speak to Haraki and see if we can get the factory to sew them on with double the thread, but his reply was ‘this doesn’t happen in Japan’ - so basically, we need to be more careful. Either way, will do what I can

yeah, I think China better at sewing buttons. Almost all Japan-made shirts I’ve got have this problem. I like to think it’s by design: Forcing the wearer to make a personal connection with the garment by re-sewing buttons back onto the garment. Good opportunity to swap out thread colors and if you loose ‘em the buttons themselves.

Haraki, how do we avoid work shirts losing buttons?

                                          Wear Western shirts.
