@ARNC Thanks for this, really useful. Means I can look at the thread for that jacket as well 👍
As I am staring out of the window watching the rain come smashing down I am reminded what an absolutely essential jacket this will be… ‘grim up nurth’ n all that.
We have that really annoying rain that soaks you through as well 😆

@long_john86 ^ Looks like this is a 'same as normal' or size down for most of the crew. Hope that's helpful!

@Ross How thick is this shell? Does it compare to 2 or 3L Gore? or is it more substantial like the IHJ-80? RN I’m thinking of grabbing this in Medium (one size down from my usual ‘large’ IH jacket). Is there a lot of variance these dimensions? Any idea what size Johnny would take? Thanks for the help.

We call this triple layer, so I guess like 3L Gore, but im not a technical fabric buff, so I may misunderstand you.

or is it more substantial like the IHJ-80?

No, its way less substantial than the IHJ-80, in part due to it being unlined. @Giles has both, and may be able to do you side by side comparisons tomorrow when he wakes up

@Boit no worries. Also, I own a IHJ-80, and whilst I dont have it here in Philly, nor do i have the IHJ-136, from memory they are completley different beasts. The IHJ-80 feels like a standalone jacket that i wear over a tee, this feels like a shell i would wear over warm clothes in a cold storm, for eg

@Alex this is really useful info and partly why I’m considering not sizing down on this - ideally it would be able to be thrown over say a flannel and CPO combo as a waterproof ‘layer’. Still can’t quite make my mind up though…

@ross @Alex Any chance of a photo or two of it over some core items in the same tag size? E.g. the 33 / 232 / 292 / 293? Just to get a feel of how it falls/sits over a shirt - and also to get a feel of the length in comparison to westerns of the same tag size. No worries if not.

It is super thin and smooth Completely different from the IHJ-80. It's designed as a superlightweight "emergency" waterproof layer, and yes it is slightly oversized for that reason. I wore the sample L over all sorts of other stuff in Morocco.

You will be happy with an XL or XXL - Use sleeve length to determine between the two.

                                  Additional observations.

It is very windproof, but unless you are exerting yourself, it adds zero warmth.
If you are wearing it just over a t-shirt in the rain, it is a little unnerving (until you get used to it), because it feels like it is leaking, but that is just the coolth of the rain effectively next to you skin.
The hood is large (designed to go over a helmet), so in the wind, it flaps around.

It looks as though this is the same (or similar) as other three layer PTFE waterproof membranes such as gore-tex. What is important about these fabrics (“shells”) is that they let moisture out of the garment while preventing wind and rain to enter. It’s like a one way valve for moisture. Allowing water vapor to escape the garment is critical for keeping you dry and thus warm. This textile technology has been around for quite some time and is what is worn by almost all outdoor enthusiasts here in the PNW.

This is an excellent jacket! Exceeds my expectations. Gonna be a quiver killer for me when I travel. Cut tags off 15mins after signing off UPS. Feels more like 2.5Layer (Paclite) Goretex. Which is perfect for how I want to use this: everyday streetwear and some light adventuring. IMHO, 3L has less year-round utility.

@Bailey, Thanks for helping me get the right one. 👍To Medium.
