This is, and probably will always be in my top 10. I studied at The London School of Economics, in the early 80's. I kept on seeing posters for The The, had no idea who they (he) weer/was, eventually I had to find out, so I bought the album Soul Mining, and instantly fell in love with Uncertain Smile, that piano at the end.....
Well the pianist was Jules Holland, so no way was it going to be shit.
My sister Sophie is married to Nick Murphy, and they move in circles that leave me green with envy. In the summer of 2024 they went on a cruise in a little ship around the north coast of Scotland, as guests of Ade Edmondson and Jennifer Saunders. There were a few other guest including Jules. One night they went ashore for dinner, something that they were reticent to do, the party included 6 or 7 people who would be immediately recognised. But they were in the arsehole of nowhere and thought they could get away with it. They dined in the dining room and after dinner, to their horror, a guy passing on the way to the loo, recognised Jules and made a bee-line for him. Massive fan boydom ensued, and everyone else tried to look the other way and pretend it was not happening, the guy was a local school music teacher and through covid had spent a load of time teaching (via Zoom) his students about the beauty of the piano, and his piano heroes. Thirty minutes later, someone noticed the Jules was no longer present, my sis and Nick (being the least recognisable of the group) went looking for him. He was found in the public bar, sharing a piano stool with the teacher, playing the most amazing duets. The teacher was virtually in tears, asking everyone with a pulse to take photos and vids, because "no one will ever believe what is happening to me".....
Jules made that guys life. I love him for that....
