+1 for Technics SL1200. I've been enjoying the more recent SL1200GR with an Ortofon Blue stylus for a few years now, no issues and sounds good to me.
-
@prpx I have a port setup on my hifi, and I use it to stream Apple music through the receiver and speakers, but I was never able to get it to go the other way and put the LP or CD play through to my Sonos speakers.
I thought maybe I misunderstood the capabilities and it didn't work both ways - but you've got it working? Maybe I need to revisit it, I've likely done something wrong.
-
@ManiacLachy - hej, my turntable has a built in preamp. Output from turntable goes into port input. From port i stream to sonos speakers. If your turntable does not have a builtin preamp than plug it in the amp, amp to port and stream from there. You have to have sonos speakers for that setup. I have ikea bookshelf ones (4 of them) and a pair of sonos 3

Thanks all @Mizmazzle @68degreesorless @GraemeE @Aetas @prpx @IH-GARY @NickD (and others if I have missed you) for your suggestions. Off to Loud and Clear in Glasgow for a look/see. Technics SL1200 looks canny

@Crispy-Heron GR or MK7?
-
@prpx thanks, I accept it's likely user error!
I'll give it another try this weekend. The turntable doesn't have a pre-amp, but I think I'd want it connected to the amplifier anyway, so I can push any input, LP, CD, etc to the Sonos speakers - I have a Roam 2, and 2 Sonos One speakers.
-
@ManiacLachy - sure, in that case you just put amp output to port and off you go streaming!
i know it sounds weird but their analog to digital conversion is lossless and wireless bandwith more than enough to guarantee signal transmission without any penalty. it is not romantic, but It is very satisfying

What you boys know about this

Ps new AirPods make me think that being a music lover is better than being an audiophile….

-
@truby I would think that you would have to have a certain level of appreciation of music,to begin with,to be an audiophile. I was a musician all my entire life, and for me it was and still is about what the musicians are playing as opposed to how it sounds. If I’m not enjoying a musical performance for whatever reason, there’s no level of equipment that will change that for me,conversely a brilliant performance on a crappy set up will still blow me away.

Way back when, I had to have a meeting with record producer Jimmy Iovine. At the time he was very passionate about converting iPod users away from the stock earphones that came with the iPod player to an upgraded option. Jimmy talked at length about a certain part of a song on Tom Petty's Damn the Torpedoes album that took days to get just right but would be forever lost if the album was only ever heard on compressed media through low grade earphones. He just wanted listeners to hear music the way it was recorded and was genuinely sad about where the audio listening sound was heading at the time. Although at the time we both had a $$$ stake in the mission, I for sure was happy to support any and all options to help him achieve his objective. I love the experience of listening to an album on vinyl through a nice hifi - but I'm pleased earphones have progressed a long way from the original Apple option. The spatial sound and clarity of the latest Apple AirPod devices is to my old lugs fabulous and thankfully anyone new to Damn the Torpedoes can now digitally hear it pretty close to how Jimmy and Tom intended.

@Jett129 what instrument do you play?
I can’t play any…..
Yea I’m seeing how good these new AirPods are…. Impressive bass “which is what the kids want ; ). They hit hard and accurate.
I’m an audiophile for sure. I would go broke buying audio gear if the lord didn’t help me.

Into the gear, it’s kinda like being a foodie- they like the different flavors and what not. With really good audio equipment you can “taste” the notes. It’s an illusion… the speakers if they good enough can play magic tricks.

these AirPods are Soo good it kinda makes me question the need….. AirPods give you freedom to move around and not be in a fixed location. They just good, I’m recommending the new ones for sure.
