Shifting the conversation over here for music discussion outside of our unpopular opinions; I was working in my studio this afternoon and put on some music that was recommended in the Unpopular Opinions thread.

I listened to Steely Dan: Aja. Twice in a row. Man, that's a SOLID album. I've been a very casual Steely Dan fan since I took drum lessons in middle school, but I've never really sat down and listened to an album. What an intro! My drum teacher was a big Steely Dan fan and picked them because the grooves are interesting and challenging, and make for really good practice. Thanks for the rec @mclaincausey , @Matt , @flannel-slut. And @Tago-Mago , I'm still planning on giving Opeth some listening time. I just need to get over this Steely Dan high first.

@seawolf that album has Bernard Purdie, Steve Gadd, Ralph Humphrey, and Jim Keltner on drums, to name a few. Crazy jazz and session players on other instruments too. It would be hard to find an album with a better roster of talent.

I love the compositions, but the performances and production are just so insanely dialed in. Yet it still sounds natural and unforced and not overproduced.

                    Think it, be it.

Was having this conversation with a buddy yesterday about bands or genres that are accepted in certain regions, but made fun of in others.

The example I'll give is the band Sublime.

I grew up on the beaches of FL, near St. Petersburg. When I was in middle school and high school, Sublime was loved by almost everyone. Making a beach playlist? Put it on. Want a slow jam to throw on at a party? Do it. Want a solid album to bump while driving down the beach with the windows down? Done.

When I moved to Nashville a little over 10 years ago, most people seem to not take them seriously. Make fun of them. Make fun of people that like them. Etc. Almost in the same way that I make fun of bands like Nickelback or Creed.

Is there a band or genre you grew up loving in your hometown area that seems to be a joke everywhere else?

                          Wants List:
                          IHSH-20-Red, XL
                          IHSH-208-Indigo Kersey, L-XL
                          IHSH-254-Grey Kersey, L-XL
                          IHSW-45 Black, M
                          IH-526SV 21oz type III, 38 or 40
                          IH-777S-SB size 32
                          IH-777S-142 size 31 or 32

I guess in a similar vein 311 was big in college and I feel like maybe I’ve heard people kind of rip on them.

Idunno, is there a region where Nickelback are taken seriously?

@chrisjohnnick and @mclaincausey Hey, I moved these posts form the Unpopular Opinions thread to keep the music vibes in the music thread.

Great question! It's not really true today, but when I was a teenager and into my early 20s, I was really into Phish. They had a small following outside of the northeast, but not nearly as concentrated as you'd find their fanbase in the northeast. I definitely used to get flack for being into them outside of my New England bubble.

I have seen dumbass tribalism from adherents of Phish about Panic and vice versa, and in the early days there was some of that between Dead and Phish fans.

@mclaincausey I never gave a shit what anyone said. Phish, although not my favorite band anymore, are still absolutely incredible musicians. I still listen to their older shows from time to time, and they always sweep me away like they used to. I'm a little intimidated by their catalog from the 21st century, and haven't really listened to much of it.

The tribalism always confused me. I'm just here for the music. As a Phish and Dead fan, I can confidently say that it's all well-crafted music full of heart, soul, and talent. That said, I reach for the Dead more than just about anything, so I'm definitely a Deadhead with a deep appreciation of Phish.
