How stiff is it?

Have you tried the 21oz jackets or pants? It is just like that...definitely stiffer than the Wabash. It is a heavy duty apron.

Does the bulk of the 21oz denim restrict mobility?

Not when I wear it around my classroom. I can sit, stand, walk, move around without noticing any restrictions.

And is it noticeably warm? Would you wear it on a warm summer day with shorts and flip-flops for a BBQ?

I have only worn it in an air conditioned classroom where it is rather chilly. I would wear it on a warm summer day with shorts and flip flops for a BBQ, though. But I would bet the Wabash would be more comfortable.

I’m trying to figure out if this is the right apron for everyday kitchen use, in a warm-ish Australian climate. Or is more of a heavy-duty workshop apron?

I really want the denim version, but perhaps the 1/os wabash is a more sensible option.

I would recommend you try the Wabash from what you are saying. Unless you are a heavy denim aficionado, the lighter weight options would be better for hot outdoor climates.

Thank you boys. I will definitely try to compare them side-by-side.

I'm biased towards getting the 21oz denim version, mainly because this may be the only 21oz piece I will own. Too hot over here for heavy jeans or jackets.
However, it if is not practical, then the 14oz wabash is the way to go.

But, I foresee that my biggest problem will be that once I see them side by side, I will want to buy both

Ok boys, it is done. I went to Hachioji, looked at both the denim and indigo wabash versions. I never really stood a chance. The wabash is lovely, but IH denim is IH denim.

The 21oz denim version actually does not feel so heavy. And if it softens with use, it will be perfect.

I wear this almost every day in my art classroom at work. It took a while, but now it is softening up nicely and is easier to wear than before when it was new. I put my hands in the pockets a lot and it's starting to fade there. Kind of hard to tell in the photos.

@JunkPants this is the one piece I think i can really get away with long increments without washing too. It's just art supplies that are getting on it. So I'll see how far i can go.

@Oaktavia have your students picked up on what Iron Heart is yet? My younger elementary kids used to read the tags on my shirts and notice if I was also wearing a hoodie or something that said Iron Heart.

So far my MS kids haven’t noticed the continuity.

@Mizmazzle I have a lesson plan called Nice Fit! that has students draw flat lays and/or mannequins/models wearing various outfits for a fashion design drawing. Have done this with 8th graders in the past, but i have all 6th grade this year. The cover photo for my lesson plan has all IH in a flat lay photo. Some of the students pick up on it and dig it. This year I told my 6th graders in September that I was going to Gosport to meet the IH folks and showed them a slideshow presentation when I got back of photos from my trip. They couldn't wrap their heads around having friends that live in a different country, but liked the photos of the repairs shop and the branding of Iron Heart. They understand fashion as culture and appreciate a well dressed teacher. I get comments on my fits in the hallways from time to time.

@Oaktavia love this!! I’ve always made discussion of my love of boots and denim very upfront with my students. I’ve even layered it into lessons. But what you’ve got going on here is really cool. Shows the kids the concept in real times through their teachers presence and allows them to reflect on their own styles and the fashion trends in the greater pop culture. Very well done man.

World Tour Apron, circa 2012?

The patch was tattooed by one of the tour participants.

And it was signed by everyone that participated in the tour, although the signatures are a little faded at this point.

@seawolf oh wow, it's cool to see this. I like how there are slight differences between this one and the current version, pocket-wise. Making knots on the end of the straps makes a lot of sense. I'm going to knot mine on Monday when I go to work. Thanks for sharing this.

@Oaktavia And this version has large grommets that the apron "strings" go through which differs from the other versions that have stitched-on loops. Glad to be able to share it!

@Mizmazzle This apron has been around the world on the world tour, and around again on my deployment in 2017-2018, so it's had quite a journey over about a dozen years. And I've used it for so many things and get compliments on it all the time. It's quite a piece!

Wore this to work last school year teaching art to public school kids. Three washes and I did not clock wear days. I wore it intermittently throughout the day so I didn't add that all up. I'll just count school years. One down!
