All flights booked and now to the question of the train (Gatwick to Portsmouth/Portsmouth to Gatwick)...Any need to book in advance or just pay as you go?

How to get to Gosport from the two major London airports:

London Gatwick - direct train to Portsmouth Harbour, then follow the signs to the Gosport Ferry. Buy train tickets here. Around 90mins.

London Heathrow - by taxi or rental car is around 90mins direct.

Alternatively, direct coach to Portsmouth, The Hard, which takes around 3hours. Buy tickets here

Finally, you can catch a bus to Woking from Heathrow, then take a direct train to Portsmouth Harbour, then follow the signs to the Gosport Ferry. Buy train tickets here. Around 120 mins.
