I have a bottle Kyrö's Malt Rye finished in Marsala casks. This was a special bottling for the german market in 2021 I think.
I am really impressed what they managed to do with this relatively young spirit. The fact that the use 100% malted rye and nothing else really separates them from other ryes.

During fall and winter I really like sherry-matured whiskies.
One of my current favorites is this 19y.o. Glenfarclas:

@maxximum the Marsala finished Kyrö sounds good, and probably not too far from their Monbazillac finished rye which I recently finished (a special bottling for the 2022 Whisky Show and still available from The Whisky Exchange).

I'm probably holding off buying more bottles until I've made a dent in my current stock, but always good to hear what others are enjoying.

@maxximum 100% rye at a young age sounds HOT, I'm curious how the marsala would soften the bite.

@ARNC I'm in a similar situation. I don't really want to increase my collection any more, I've been trying to shrink it to singles instead of having multiples in stock. Now just replacing what I consume.

@WhiskeySandwich It's not that hot actually.... Spicy but well integrated. I had 10y.o. Ryes that were much spicier that this one. The fact that they use only malted rye makes it very different. As far as I know all of the other distilleries that use 100% Rye in their mashbill use a mix of grain and malted Rye.

Overall I really like the Kyrö. Very different and not really comparable to a american Rye whiskey.

You could maybe describe it as a mixture between a american rye and a scottish single malt.

@maxximum That absolutely sounds like something I would like to try. The malting of grain is something I've overlooked. I'll have to dive into that.

I like my American Rye to actually be of lower rye content and have a good mix of corn, etc.
and I like my bourbon to have some good rye kick too, I think it rounds it out nicely.

High West Campfire is an interesting blend of Rye, Scotch, and Bourbon that I think is blended pretty well.

I enjoy Japanese hybrid style whiskies that are bourbon and scotch inspired too but they can sometimes be a little light.

@WhiskeySandwich If you ever come across this I think it would be right up your alley with 39% corn in the mashbill. My favorite when I can get it. Around $50 is a pretty square price. IMG_2153.png

@Jett129 I will def keep an eye out for that. I'm a HH fan and thats a good mashbill. Thanks for the tip! and thats my favorite review site btw

Update: just realized my hunch about the name was correct, this is a local MD spirit. I've not liked our local whiskies but I will def give this a chance to break that trend.

As far as other ryes go, I like Rittenhouse for cocktails, and as @Jett129 has already referenced, my daily will always be Pikesville. I've kept a bottle on my shelf for years, now... long before I started chasing Bourbons.
