Coronavirus (Covid-19) Discussion

I can understand hoarding food, but I really don’t get the tp thing
I’m assuming it’s because of the social distancing thing. If it’s recommended that people self isolate it would make sense to have extra tp on hand. But, I’m sure there are people overbuying because they’re acting as though this is the apocalypse

Apparently, academics state that we associate any disease with hygiene, and our first subconscious association of hygiene is faeces, we therefore buy toilet paper in excess.
Once we have carried out all the necessary Covid 19 tests on the most vulnerable, and this disease crawls back under whatever rock/pesiary dish it originated, I think our whole species needs to by psychologically analysed… Just to be sure.

Thanks, that was very helpful.
And I agree, people need to get their head checked.
I think everyone should be prepared for this kind of thing, and then some. Natural disasters and civil unrest, while not common, are not uncommon either.
I've been accused to being scared, which is why I have all this stuff. There is a pretty significant difference between being scared and being prepared.
I'm not scared of food shortages or violence because I've been prepared for years.
Being someone who is heavily self defense minded, I find a lot of people prefer to be unprepared because they don't want to acknowledge that violence is a possibility.
"This kind of thing isn't something that happens in my lifestyle" is something I hear often right before someone condemns me for being prepared.
Oftentimes, the fight comes to you, not the other way around.

I was going to keep this to myself because I don't like to whine, but I've already experienced some racism due to covid19:
Wed: I was buying burgers at Five Guys and someone asked me if I have "the Chinese coronavirus"
Thurs: someone wouldn't get on the bed next to me at physical therapy and wanted to be on the other side of the room
Today: I was walking out of Lidl (again because the shelves were empty yesterday afternoon) and someone flung an empty shopping cart at me and shouted "YOU DID THIS!!!" She ran for her life after I turned to her
It's going to get worse, they only declared the National Emergency Fri…

Supply chains will get back to normal eventually. I think people were caught off guard and are now buying last minute. It’s the IH effect, except with bog roll and sanitizer [emoji851]

Sorry you had to experience this. It’s pretty sad that people continue to react this way when hysteria grips the public.
Again, I’m cautiously optimistic about how this plays out. Supply chains will return to normal when the hysteria dies down. I’m basically doing what I always do but will avoid places with lots of people, except for grocery stores. Kinda sh*tty timing too because my son’s bday is coming up and he wants to go to Chuck E Cheese to play video games. The upside, Chuck E Cheese is always a ghost town when we go

Buying TP may make you feel some level of control.
Diarrhea is one of the secondary symptoms. If you are with your family and all in self-isolation for two weeks because of the runs (God forbids), TP can quickly be depleted. Of course, you can always take a shower. -
@JDelage that is brilliant. It's the sort of social responsibility we should all be exhibiting.

If work shuts down I have money for about 3 months then I’m Fucked but if they halt trading then I can’t even access it. Wasn’t reAlly worried until now

Fuck. The UK Government's press conference just announced some of the anticipated plans. Again, frustratingly restricted from disclosing, but more is on the way next week.
Please everyone, have the sense not to let this affect your mindset once this passes. There is a risk that this will impact society as much as, or on some level, more than WWII.
The finance industry will be legislated and regulated, legislation to restrict movement more widely in future.
Let's not live in fear or terror, and remember to care about each other.

Forget the loo roll…

On a weekly wfh rota as of tomorrow, though being a social worker, that is just not tenable in the longer term.
It is concerning that in the next couple of weeks the full powers of the UK state are likely to kick in once emergency legislation is in place. The thing with emergency legislation is that it is never revoked. We still have 'emergency' taxation legislation that was introduced during WWII in the UK that hasn't been revoked.
Everyone aged 70 and over will be required to self isolate, and it is anticipated that the police will be given powers of arrest for anyone in breach.
I love most over 70s who I've spoken to, including my parents. The almost unanimous response is 'fuck that for a laugh' and 'I've had a good innings'. Let's see Boris deal with that
