@Kasi today I learned telling someone their JMMs aren't made in Japan is among the most hot button topics on the IH forum… definitely need to take more drugs next time I say it 😃

@Daniel San Thank you! They're Balzac — I decided to try a narrower pair after my Dealan 53s and feel like these work a little better on me. Might pick up a pair of regular Dealans down the line if they release a pair in a color I love. I really want the super classic black frame / green lens.

Excerpt from the NY Times: "The company works with manufacturers in Italy and Japan, which use machines that date back to just after World War II. These machines require plenty of adjustments, and if that yields frames that are less precisely cut than mass-produced ones, that suits Mr. Mage just fine. “The imperfections reveal a human touch and gives our frame this warm and sensual finish,” he said."

All current JMM are made in Japan but they’ve also used Italian ateliers. On the old web site you could search by country of origin and they had at least one line if not more lines that were made in Italy. Lines meaning several models per line or collection.

This is true. Although, most of the frames are produced in Japan. Off the top of my head, I know the Ray and Vandella models were made in Italy…

Definitely one of those learning days.  That article I posted was from July of 2021 in an interview with Mr. Mage (or his PR team).  Even on the current website there are references to production in Italy.

Reminds me of a discussion between G and Haraki regarding production in China and the overall reactions.  If I recall correctly, why does it matter where it’s made if I put my name on it and it’s a good product.

                                  I’m sure G can/will correct that quote. @Giles

They’re not using the same factories that churn out Luxotica brands when they do. Italy has been making quality acetate and frames for a long time. No shame in any Italian producer good enough for JMM

My pair are top notch and easily the best glasses that I have owned frame wise…I still like Maui Jim glass better (polarized) for on and around water.

They’re amazing lenses, even the CR39. And still an independent manufacturer. Nothing but love for Maui Jim, as good as it gets for mass manufactured shades, and best lenses in the business IMO.

JMM tickles a different itch and the lenses I’ve experienced are damn fine. The lense colors seem more about service to the colorway and design than being a performance lens like MJ. I really do love my bronze lenses and think they’re pretty close to MJ, sans polarization.

                                          Think it, be it.
