Great looking jacket and good fit for sure.

I would love to own this but every winter in the midwest seems shorter and shorter and I hear this beast is WARM.

It truly is awesome the inner liner is basically the “riders jacket “

When I first tried this on, I thought it would be too warm for anything or anywhere I did or went.  I then wore one for 2 weeks in mixed weather, what is outstanding about this jacket is that it regulates your temperature really well.  In cold it gives you warmth, in milder temperatures it just does not get too hot….No idea how it does that....

Absolutely. When it's around freezing, I ski in my quilted light parka (ihj-100) + a hardshell, and when it gets much colder than that, I ski in this beast.

Appreciated!  I tend to run hot, so I've been wondering.

The lack of insulated hand pockets has also held me back, in terms of casual use, since I have cold hands and hate wearing gloves.

In terms of wearability, how heavy is this thing, compared to your other IH outerwear pieces?

I think that it's worth noting that synthetics are largely outperforming down in most ways at this point (though not in weigh yet, which is something you asked about). So, perhaps that better breathability is part of why @Giles has mentioned not overheating like crazy in this, and I should note that I feel the same way. I think the hand pockets are nice here, and I don't really need more than what it has. It's not terribly cold where I live, but I did bring it home to my parents' house in Minnesota this year and it was fine n temperatures as low as ~0 F / -18 C. I guess I had moderate level gloves on in that kind of weather, but in any temps where it's not cold enough that I'd just want gloves regardless, the hand pockets are totally fine.

Weight wise, it's not that heavy. As mentioned, synthetic currently requires a little more weight for the same warmth than down, but some of my other IH jackets (thigh length hooded alpaca, One Star leather with that pretty heavy metal belt, etc) feel like they're heavier to me. I don't feel like weight of the jacket has ever been something I've considered when wearing this. Perhaps the staff have exact weight stats on it? I wouldn't think weight is going to be a factor here unless you're looking to do some serious through-hiking and absolutely need to minimize mass (in which case, down is the only real option).

Down is useless when wet so it makes sense that a jacket built for bad weather has synthetic insulation.

But for the same reason I don’t understand why the shell consists of 60% cotton.  I know there is a membrane, but I still wouldn’t want to risk the shell getting soaked when I’m a long way from someplace warm.

I was indeed interested in its through-hiking potential. Thanks for taking the time and energy to weigh in.  😃

I would differ with you slightly. Down is better for insulation per cubic volume as well as for weight–so the advantages are efficiency per weight AND per volume, if it is important to minimize weight, to be able to pack something down, or to maintain a slimmer profile.

Synthetic is better when wet and easier to care for. It also usually seems less expensive and there is less animal cruelty involved.

High fill power down is still king of insulation efficiency by weight and volume, unless you get it wet--if your usage has that risk, avoid it.

                            Think it, be it.

                                  Hey y’all
I have one of these in black and it is absolutely amazing. Recently wore it through a blizzard up in Truckee, California while trying to clear the roads and it kept me warm and toasty. I just wanted to drop a note that there is currently a khaki one in large on grailed for 500. It isn’t mine nor do I know who’s selling it. Large is out of stock here so just thought I’d let yous guys know. let me know if I’m stepping on toes, posting in the wrong place, or being a dick.
                                  Thanks

@Inorganic Have you tried spot cleaning it with water and a little soap? With it being waterproof, I would doubt that a stain would permeate the fabric.

good point about the stain likely not permeating the fabric. what about indigo? does that ever wash out? I would assume so because it bleeds out of the original garments...
