Yet another unsolvable mystery of the wild American frontier.
Some fun facts:
-The “sand” is gypsum.
-The animals that live here are the same as those just outside the park but these have all evolved to be white.
-People, on average, eat about 30 ponds of gypsum on a lifetime.
-National Park sand gets all up in your underwear every bit as much as beach sand. -
Man I love the desert. If y’all get up north, we really loved Taos, Cimarron Canyon, and the surrounding areas up there. We went during shoulder season so Taos was quietly beautiful and a great retreat and recharge. Had a northern NM blue corn adobada enchilada that inspires me to this day.
Then, speaking of tunnels, we never got there yet but want to explore Valles Caldera and the Gilman Tunnels. Might be a fun loop for your family to take that route and loop through Santa Fe. Bet the kids (and adult kids) would enjoy the Meow Wolf museum. One is opening here in Denver soon and we can hardly wait!

We’re doing the cavern tour tomorrow but we did the bat flight talk last night. There’s an amphitheater at the mouth of the cavern opening and every night at sunset 500,000 bats ascend to frolic. No photos allowed sadly. It was pretty magnificent though. Lots of Karen’s saying shit like “How muchlonger are these bats going to be? I can’t sit out here all night.” ???
