These are the same copper buttons. But they used to do the overdye first, without the buttons, and then add the copper buttons on afterward all shiny. At some point (it was mentioned in the forum for either the 99 or the 178 when it happened) they decided to put the buttons on first so they get dyed and oxidize on the surface from the sulphur. So they aren't silver buttons, but copper buttons that have been affected on the surface.

Thanks for the info! But what do you guys think of "upgrading" to the non oxidized version. That copper tone looks really nice. Would be kinda cool to have a tribute to 99

Sorry just want to add I know eventually the normal copper ones would oxidize into these "silvery" ones. But just like denim, I earn my "fades" 😛

Alright that's silly. Just a thought to share.

From the 99 thread. I'd imagine if you wash the shirt more than a few times or leave it in some type of humid environment (or just give it long enough time), natural oxidation would just occur right? Overdying just accelerates the process.(?)

I'd be willing to bet money you could clean the oxidation off the buttons with, Tarnex, Coca- Cola, or lemon juice.

                They wont.

For copper to oxidise due to ambient conditions time will be the important factor. But it would take a lot of time.

I have products with IH copper snaps that are five or six years old, have been washed in a machine with detergent multiple times and seen scattered action otherwise and the snaps are a bit darker and less glossy.

Overdying puts the copper through a robust, dynamic chemical process so the tarnishing and oxidisation is extreme. It would take a hell of a long time to get that result through normal wear and washing.

@gniquil Just to clear any confusion, the oxidation on the snaps of my 99 is not from the copper itself. I painted the snaps with black enamel nail polish when the shirt was new and that's what they look like after a few years.

Thanks to everyone for the advice on fit. I appreciate it. Am planning to wear it as a shirt, so think it’s probably too big across the chest. I would exchange for a medium if one were available, but there isn’t. Doh. Maybe I’ll return it and get the indigo CPO…....

Wearing it today over a long sleeve (and slightly distressed from wear) OCBD for some elbow protection. This shirt does need to break in a bit for it to be long term comfortable. The fit is great, I don't think anything would be solved if it were a size bigger (the shoulders are already perfectly on the slightly larger side as is, and the sleeves are the perfect slightly long side too), but this 18oz overdye is just brutally stiff. Hopefully it softens up at least a little bit with wear.

OD tends to soften quickly and a great deal. Certainly my experience from 21oz OD, 14oz OD, 19oz OD and 22oz OD. Of those the 19oz was easily the most tank-like to begin with but after wear it also ends up sweat pant comfortable. Having owned jeans in the original indigo 18oz vintage I am sure this will also gp that way.

If the chest peaks out by the armpit at the side of the pocket, Neph, would you expect that to drape better with washing, wearing and softening?

It will most definitely soften up beautifully and drape nicely as it ages with wear. As a matter of fact you will see a noticeable difference after 30 days of consistent wearing. I just got mine yesterday and having the 19oz OD jacket as Neph93 mentioned ,makes this feel a lot easier to deal with. Nowhere near as stiff feeling. I am on day two and its already softening up and i am not a small dude. I am putting a lot of qpressure on it. Wear it and i think you will love it.

I don't quite know what you mean mate… but it sounds like a crease in a weird place, so the answer is it will break in and calm down some, but it could also mean the shirt is a bit big.

Personally I couldn't decide if you needed to size down based on your pics the other day. I'd say you were good of you were happy with a relaxed fit, but could probably do one down too.

I see a lot of folks buying and wearing this as a regular shirt, and if you can pull that off then great, but it isn't designed to do that, so judging it by normal IH western standards doesn't really work. My advice to you would be to try it with the rest of your wardrobe. Stick your wabby shirt under it, stick a hoodie under it, wear a t shirt combo under it. See what works best.

Thanks for all the comments about the oxidation of the buttons. I guess that silvery oxidized look is unique to the OD version. So any old timers had any opinions about the copper ones?

#1 An outstanding look, because only the dying process makes this happen!
#2 Overdying the 76 without snaps was a great move at this time.
