It was Carmine, who was then sponsored by the Ludwig Drum Compan, that told them that they have to see this guy,and was instrumental in getting Bonham the big bass drum that became his signature, and such an important part of his look and sound. But it was Dino Danelli who was the first to use such a prominent bass drum sound in(and you could argue this) Lonely Too Long.

When I think big bass drum pioneers, Chick Webb comes to mind. I am sure there are other examples, but I remember as a kid seeing that big thing and then hearing it. His was 28", which I think is 2" larger than Bonham's ever got, and this was in the 20s-30s.

To hear Carmine tell it, Bonham told him he was an influence, and he didn't even know what Bonham was talking about (also gets into what you were talking about @Jett129 ) : https://blabbermouth.net/news/carmine-appice-john-bonham-told-me-i-was-one-of-his-influences

That’s the age old story, but I can’t believe he never mentions Dino Danelli (Also sponsored by Ludwig)who was doing it 2 years before him,and they were playing the same clubs on Long Island. As much as I liked The Vanilla Fudge,I always thought that they were just a souped up version of The Rascals. First time I saw Led Zeppelin they opened up for The Iron Butterfly.

Took my niece to see The Shins, her favorite band, at Red Rocks touring in honor of the 29th anniversary of their album “Oh, Inverted World.” They played that album through and got to as many songs as they could before lightning scuttled the encore. Great show, great players. Loved the drummer, who is also in James Mercer’s (who effectively IS the Shins) and Danger Mouse’s project Broken Bells. He had a great, effortless groove and a very deep snare sound that was cool.

We had GA tickets and I didn’t realize until we were in line that GA started at row 39. That’s too far back at Red Rocks, as the sound becomes unpredictable and subject to the whims of the weather. You do get great views up top though. So I got us a choice spot on one of the planters, which are always considered GA. Between the stage and Ship Rock, we could see a thunderstorm in the distance. So it was a dramatic setting but also a great view of the stage and band. It was both of our first Shins gig, and the album is older than she is, and she’s been listening to it since she was in the womb. I listened to it a bunch back in the day and it was good to rediscover it.

            Think it, be it.

As great as Buddy was,and he was really really great. The running joke is A guy calls Buddy Rich, and says Is Buddy home? And the woman answering the phone says I’m sorry Buddy’s dead. Next day the guy calls again…Is Buddy home? To which the woman replies Buddy’s dead. A couple of days later the guy calls again, same question, same response. This time the woman says you call every day asking for Buddy, and I tell you he’s dead! To which the guy responds…I know,I just like hearing it!

Been going through their extensive back catalogue, which is varied… The video below is a little glimpse at their more psychedelic stuff, with weird time signatures galore. These guys seem to have put out a couple of albums a year for a decade...!

My favourite ever NMA tour was around 1991/2 and was called “The Smalltown England” tour. Only small venues mostly in out of the way towns. It was awesome. Used to see Red Sky Coven whenever possible too, and they only played back rooms of pubs.

I wish they’d come to Oslo, but I need to visit Deutschland soon and they always play there  😃 It’s been too long.
