Lynch hates his Dune, and hearing about how passionate Villenueve is about the project makes me think it’s going to be incredible. It doesn’t look like a cash grab remake, and I’m very excited about it.

It looks beautiful and the cast is out of this world. I love the Lynch movie, and Dune is my favorite book; still, I can't wait.

I do have a couple issues with the trailer already though. One is the worm refusing to finalize its attack on Paul, which is not in the book. Second is that Chani sounds winy talking about how the Harkonens are killing her people, when the book is clear that it were the Fremen's killing Raban's troops. Finally the armor in Paul's desert fight scene (again the smugglers I suppose) is gimmicky.

It doesn’t always bother me when movies aren’t faithful to their source material.  I like how Douglass Adams encouraged every version of Hitchhikers Guide to be its own thing.  I enjoy being able to get something out of both the nook and the movie without it being repetitive.  I don’t know if that’s what’s going on here but I’m open to it.

Yeah the cast is pretty stacked, it seems like it has a lot going for it.  I prefer long form Lynch over his films anyway.  If his Netflix thing materializes I will consume it with abandon.

+1 for super excited about Dune. It is such a fantastic book that doing it justice in a movie is a challenge, but I have a good feeling about this one.

I enjoy Lynch's Dune. I don't always mind deviations from a book as I have it in my mind's eye, and I found Lynch's imagining of the story pretty decent, probably because I never had the expectation that it would perfectly reflect what Herbert put in my head when I read it. If Villaneuve can get closer to that vision, so much the better, but I will watch without the weight of that expectation.

                  Think it, be it.

I’m very very excited about the Villeneuve Dune. I feel like the Lynch version isn’t very successful as an adaptation, but it’s plenty awesome as a typically weird Lynchian thing, and that’s really all it needs to me, IMO. I mean, he could fart in a bag and I’d watch it.

I was always a big fan of Villeneuve, but I’ve gotta say that he went so far above expectations on Blade Runner that I expect Dune to knock it out of the park.

Just got back from the new Candyman movie.  It was a great movie in its own right, and as a continuation of the original film.

Check it out @neph93 @JDelage some really choice lines in this one and, superlative title aside, I feel the reviewer captured mostly how I feel about the Lynch Dune.

Jupp… I’m down with that. And quite funny how his access to the movie mirrors my own. From being wow’ed and confused as a child then experiencing it zonkwd out as a teen. I’ve watched it many times since then and there is so much amazing in it that the silliness barely gets a look in. The grotesque barbarism of the Harkonnens is a case in point.

The new version is a much more subdued affair. Very clean and stylish, very polished and beautiful. More dreamy and romantic, in an Arabian Nights sort of way. Although Baron H is still quite foul of course. Disturbing in a less obvious fashion.

Lovely article, thank you. I agree with much, but this is the money quote: "The score by Toto—synths and strings and horns and guitars cranked to 11—is why God gave us ears." The soundtrack is indeed mind meltingly awesome.

Have I mentioned that Lynch's Paul & Jessica look much better than the actors in Villeneuve's rendition (can't comment yet on the acting). In particular, Jessica is glorious, at least until she shaves (her head!)

I have watched Lynch's piece so many times that I know some passages by heart, starting with Irulan's entire opening scene: "A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then, that this is the year 10194. The known universe is ruled by the Paddisha Emperor Shaddam the IVth, my father…."

Yes, I'm a geek - or at least I was one when Lynch's movie came out. By then (I was 13) I had read the book at least a half dozen times. I've re-read the entire series every few years since then. I still love it the way I love LOTR and not many other things.
