Been lurking for a while, finally have a couple questions to ask.

I’m not a big fan of high contrast fades, so I prefer to do hot washes — and dry, if possible — every 3-4 weeks. I know the 21 oz doesn’t shrink much if you’re careful, but what if you’re like me, and regularly hit it with hot water washing machine washes? Any suggestions on what I could expect?

Same for the 21 oz OD. Does it behave any differently with lots of washes?

Tips on avoiding marbling? I find some denim marbles easily in the dryer, and others don’t. Thoughts on how to safely use a dryer with this denim?

      Thanks,
      JT

          Hi there…

The 21oz simply does not shrink. The jeans are fully sanforised and have been treated to a number of processes to ensure this. Washing every 3-4 will not make a difference. The same goes double for the OD. The OD process requires very high temps and levels of agitation that strips all possible shrinkage out of the fabric.

With 21oz you will experience a lot of stretch (with the OD this is even quicker). When you wash they will return to the size they started out as.

21oz is perfect for avoiding high contrast fades btw.

Don't.  Hang it and allow it to dry naturally. If I need mine to dry quickly, I pop over a radiator - but here, that is a winter-only thing.

I don’t think the 21oz marbles easily but I agree with Giles that avoiding the dryer is best. It screws with the fabric royally, destroying fibres and thinning out the denim. Regular drying will certainly shorten the life of your jeans.

I don’t necessarily do it every 3-4 weeks, (probably every couple months, unless I have a food spill), but I’ve warm washed an tumble dried pretty much all of the iron heart products I’ve ever had.

For the most part, washing inside out and making sure to soak completely before the wash cycle has prevented too much marbling.  21oz. Does pretty good with this method, and overdye too. One thing I have noticed is that the spin cycle that wrings out the water in a machine wash can create creases in the fabric, so which can translate into fade lines. These usually go away with wear. As for drying, I see how it might weaken the fibers over time, but I haven’t noticed any difference in the life span of my jeans. My 11-year old 634s have been patched in the crotch, but otherwise they’re in great shape!

I think if you want to machine wash and dry for convenience sake, just embrace that a little marbling or lineage may become part of the wabi sabi on your jeans.

@jat I wash my 21oz every 1-2 weeks (anywhere from cold to hot depending on the rest of the load) and have had great results.

I washed inside out for the 1st 6 months or so, but have stopped even doing that with no adverse effects at this point.

I would recommend against drying with heat like the others.  Air drying will extend the life of the pants, and with heat you also run the risk of royally frying the leather patch

While I’ve watched IH for the last six or seven years, I never sized the few pieces I bought correctly and ended up moving them onto other homes. That is until I was watching a J Bannon interview and renewed my interest in the brand. Fast forward a couple weeks and voila, I have an IHSH-239, IHSH-192, and IHSH-133 hanging in my closet. With my size nailed down, it’s a dangerous game now haha.

The pigment printed westerns definitely have my attention. The question is, which one? Or.. both.

Just introducing myself to the forum.  I just bought my first Iron Heart product and am excited to see it in person.  I ordered the Kersey fabric shirt.  I’m sure I’ll have some questions for the community in the future, but for now I’m just saying “Hi”.

At first time when I bought my first IH-666xhs at "Franz und Emil" I thought I have to be crazy. Spent €299 for a jean ???
later, getting used to doing so. 2 Problems because of that:

                                      1. you can not take all the good things into the grave
                                      2. do you really need lots of such expensive stuff

My answer: you only live one times. Enjoy it  🙂
Moreover I have 2 sons, maybe they will wear also this stuff because well made things endure time…
