@neph93 my opinion is that if you like it and it keeps time, it's fine. 😃

I don't think that you need to be much more qualified than that.

@Filthy if you're looking at alternatives to the Tag Heuer Monaco, Zenith have just released re-issued the El Primero A384.

      Hodinkee have a write-up.

I’d take the zenith over the tag any day of the week and twice on Sunday

                @Graeme:

Want an Omega without a helium valve? And that had a depth rating that laughs at the pathetic pressure a Rolex Deep Sea Sea Dweller can handle?

You're in luck: Omega have just shown off the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional, with a 15,000 metre rating. And they sent it down to the bottom of the Marianas Trench to test it.

                Only two problems:

                • They only made four, so you're probably not going to get your hands on one.

                • It's 28mm thick, so won't fit under your shirt cuffs!

Time and Tide have an article about it. Worth a read.

                Here's a great gallery: https://newatlas.com/omega-ultra-deep-watch-record/60261/#gallery

I was killing time waiting to see the new X-Men movie at the weekend, and dropped into a dealer with a few Panerais. The sales girl asked me if I'd like to look at the $200K tourbillon, despite me saying that I couldn't afford it.

So here's some watch porn for you. 😃

Incidentally, the X-Men flick isn't that great. Incidentally, James McAvoy is wearing a Rolex Milgauss in the final scene, which will be handy for dealing with Magneto's particular skillset. But the movie is set in 1992, which is fifteen years before that model turned up…

Would have been better off in that regard with the Aqua Terra >15k Gauss 😉

heading back to perth from singapore, i decided to do my usual stop by the rolex store to see if they have any in stock. unlike regular ADs, i do believe this particular shop doesn't have a so called waiting list as it is within the transit area. so it's ultimately being in the right place at the right time..

i thought it was my lucky day when i saw 4 sports models till i saw the sign…

I'm planning on buying a new watch later this year, depending on what happens with work. The Zenith Defy Inventor is my favourite piece, but it's pretty expensive, and it got me thinking that if I spent a bit more I could get a Patek.

I dropped by one of the local dealers and enquired about the Calatrava 5212A Weekly Calendar, which is one of the few models to have a steel case. Turns out it's an application only piece, and the saleswoman initially tried to get a commitment out of me there and there, when I was just trying to figure out what the ordering process was.

Then I was told that I'd need to buy other pieces to build up a relationship with the dealer before I could order one. :o

I was unimpressed by this. I'm toying with making a large, discretionary purchase, and being asked to spend money on stuff I don't want in order to get what I do.

In retrospect, my response should have been that I could go down the street and buy the even rarer H. Moser Vantablack (the shop keeps on trying to sell that to me!), or up the street and get the Cartier Noctambule. Neither would be a Patek, but I'd not be forced to jump through hoops to get one.

I've got a nice little gold 1954 Patek Calatrava you could buy off me, and you've also built up a relationship, so no need to buy stuff you don't want  😉

                                  Nice!

This one caught my eye when I was reading about a Hodinkee special edition FF Bathyscaphe (why you'd want a watch blog special edition escapes me, but they seem to do well): https://gearpatrol.com/2019/07/17/gear-patrol-special-edition-watch/

This one is a Gear Patrol SE, but I don't think anything on the watch connotes that / ruins the watch.

                                    Nice Rolex @mikebarhoot .

@mclaincausey the Hamilton looks good. They haven't done anything crazy and the orange details give it a pop of colour that's a bit less conservative than the Swiss tend to be.

The Hodinkee Bathyscaphe is a bit more conservative. I like that they deleted the date window, but the Seventies model has a bit more quirk to it.

Exactly, not staid, but not wild. I will raise the obvious objective to the date window being on a white field, which is the only flaw other than the kind of weak depth rating. I like the Hodinkee piece too, aside from the inscription on the rotor. Generally not a huge fan of the open caseback for divers, but I could let it slide.

I was at a TAG Heuer event run by Time and Tide last night, which was showing off the Carrera 02T Tourbillon Nanograph. It's an interesting piece, particularly from the technology side (and I'm pretty sure part of its conception was to troll Patek Philippe), though the carbon case made it feel a bit plasticky.

It does glow nicely under a UV light, there's even lume on the tourbillon.

One of the guys there had a very battered Seamaster 300, which he'd lent to a journalist to try out. It'd taken a beating when he caught his kid during a fall, but it's definitely a very cool watch.
