Took my son trick or treating lastnite, which for the most part, was fun. I told him before we even started that I wouldn't let him eat all the candy he gets. After coming home with a giant tote bag full of goodies I proceeded to tell him that he could pick out 20 pieces of candy to eat and that I would pay him $5 for the rest of it. This way he still gets candy but also some cash in hand to put into his piggy bank. He completely freaked out on me and says, "what's the point of trick or treating if I can't eat all the candy!"  😃 He also tried negotiating with me to give him $10 for his candy haul instead of $5 but I said no way.

I got the above idea from a grandma who told me this is what her daughter does for her kids. I thought it sounded reasonable and it clearly backfired. I explained to my son that I don't want him eating tons of candy because he'll get cavities, he'll become overweight and that there's zero nutritional value to junk food. Am I being too much of a downer?

What if you allow him something like 3 pieces a day?

Exactly what I negotiated (just!) with my two kids…

That’s pretty much what he was allowed last night. I’ll do that moving forward.

Yeah, we cap the daily intake, but our daughter is a candy freak, so trying to take it away would be an epic battle that Julie and I just don't want to have.

Kid sits down on a park bench with a brown paper bag. He proceeds to pull out and eat 7 candy bars one after the other. An old guy says hey kid if you eat all that candy it'll make you fat,rot your teeth, and give you bad skin. Kid says ya know my grandpa lived to be 107 years old,to which the old guy asks Did he eat all that candy? No he minded his own fucking business. You reminded me of one of my favorite jokes.
