I know a lot of parents with special needs kids.  Some seem perfectly typical until you've been around them for a while, and then you learn that they aren't.  So if it comes to letting a kid watch an iPad during dinner or biting himself until he bleeds, then an iPad seems ok.

I'm not going to assume I know what's best for someone else's child.

@Chris I'm a social worker and work with people who live with autism. I completely get your point, and of course you are right. I'm talking laziness not necessity. There is research that suggests ignoring children and letting them use technology instead of engaging has an affect emotionally on confidence and interpersonal skills.

As with everything in life, context is essential.

@joesaintjohn and @untucked lets go out for dinner…I think we'd get on just fine, as would our kids. We can send them off to bother other diners at their tables. There's a very fine line between what the public see as 'cute' and "annoying' child behaviour.

                    Very true.

At least once a month, I find myself leaving a public place because of annoying kids (Stores, restaurants, etc)… I 've also never returned to friends' homes and never invited them to mine again because of annoying kids.

And to think, I used to want to be a teacher, lmao!

**I'm also just an grinch, and am easily annoyed by people in general... But don't worry, if you'll be at Fish & Chips, I promise we'll get along. A few beers turns me right into an antisocial butterfly, lol

there is never a one size fits all solution to anything.  it's super easy to sit on the sideline and say I would/wouldn't do this or that until you are actually living in that person's shoes.

doesn't mean you shouldn't have your opinion on what you think you would/wouldn't do in a situation but when it boils down to it you never know until you are actually starved for time with your partner/spouse but can't get a babysitter at short notice and if you all look at the kitchen walls one more day while trying to shovel a meal down your throats after a long day at a thankless job could lead to the quicker end of your already doomed relationships with your family

but this is un-pop ops so you know

Exactly. When I met with my brother and his family last week I was trying to play catch up because I hadn't seen them in 11 yrs. My son got along well with his cousin (who has Autism) and they played some game on his phone. I think it's important to set forth boundaries for your children and follow through. It's a work in progress. I mentioned before that I once witnessed a mom screaming obscenities at her 5 yo boy at a Target. He didn't appear to be doing anything wrong but it was her use of language that really bothered me. Had she physically hit the boy I might've said something, otherwise, it's not my place to insert myself into someone else's business.

My boy is very social and thrives on playing with others. He's outgoing, friendly and has many friends, but sometimes he might do something inappropriate, in which case I step in and make sure he doesn't repeat certain behaviors. It's tough.

Definitely, but compassion and understanding goes both ways though…

As a young parent, that's why I would just remove our family from the situation and leave. It just made more sense for us to be "inconvenienced", instead of inconveniencing the entire restaurant or store, because the only thing worse than a crying baby or annoying kid is someone else's crying baby or annoying kid, lol

Crying babies used to bother me before I was a parent. After my son was born my views completely changed and now it doesn't bother me at all. Likewise with annoying kids. We all have our own personal tolerances to those things

Haha. I'm surprised you lasted as long as you did in Japan – all that slurping  😃 But I hear you, the loud smacking/chomping of food and eating with your mouth open is mildly annoying to me.

The big thing about it is when it's out of place… People being loud and uncouth at a Bar & Grill is expected... Slurping at a ramen shop is expected... Kids at McDonald's is expected.
