If that earns the scorn of others, so be it.  I accept that I'm, at best, only an average parent.

My two year old Daughter runs my shit.

I'm fine with gadgets that serve as a means to pacify children. My 5 yo sometimes becomes restless and finds it necessary to get out of the booth we're seated in and it becomes disruptive. I can either raise my voice and make a scene in the restaurant or try talking to him calmly and ask him to sit down. The latter seems to work…..sometimes  😃  I also try not to judge others through the behavior of their children. Kids will be kids and I accept that some are better behaved than others. Yes, there are some little shits out there but we were all little shits at some point in our lives. Amirite?

Me too, and did my ol' man throw technology at me to shut me up? No, he threw a shoe usually.

I am that dad that doesn't give a shit about coming over to your table and reminding you that your not the only people in the restaurant. Works too.

I don't get it. Our 3 year old is mental usually, but we just keep him entertained by talking to him and being stupid. This week's game while getting dinner at the l8cal was 'how many boogers did it take to build the booger candle in the middle of the table?'. Got 1 1/2 hrs out of that one.

I don't get the 'only way to keep them quite'. It's not the easiest it's the laziest…let's see how that goes down 😃

Until the kids were old enough to REALLY understand our expectations, and the consequences if they weren't followed (5yrs old twins, and 4 years old youngest), we rarely ate out or put ourselves in situations where "annoying kids" would be a burden on anyone else... If they can't behave and follow instructions at home, they surely won't in public...

I know a lot of parents with special needs kids.  Some seem perfectly typical until you've been around them for a while, and then you learn that they aren't.  So if it comes to letting a kid watch an iPad during dinner or biting himself until he bleeds, then an iPad seems ok.

I'm not going to assume I know what's best for someone else's child.

@Chris I'm a social worker and work with people who live with autism. I completely get your point, and of course you are right. I'm talking laziness not necessity. There is research that suggests ignoring children and letting them use technology instead of engaging has an affect emotionally on confidence and interpersonal skills.

As with everything in life, context is essential.

                                  Very true.

At least once a month, I find myself leaving a public place because of annoying kids (Stores, restaurants, etc)… I 've also never returned to friends' homes and never invited them to mine again because of annoying kids.

And to think, I used to want to be a teacher, lmao!

**I'm also just an grinch, and am easily annoyed by people in general... But don't worry, if you'll be at Fish & Chips, I promise we'll get along. A few beers turns me right into an antisocial butterfly, lol

there is never a one size fits all solution to anything.  it's super easy to sit on the sideline and say I would/wouldn't do this or that until you are actually living in that person's shoes.

doesn't mean you shouldn't have your opinion on what you think you would/wouldn't do in a situation but when it boils down to it you never know until you are actually starved for time with your partner/spouse but can't get a babysitter at short notice and if you all look at the kitchen walls one more day while trying to shovel a meal down your throats after a long day at a thankless job could lead to the quicker end of your already doomed relationships with your family
