I assume I can trust H-san to nix any possibility of this tapering nonsense…

i'm on the fence with cargos. But, I do think tapering is a good idea if it's not done too aggressively. I don't think anyone here is suggesting a strong taper, like the 777 denim, but something above that. With denim i'm comfortable with a hem in the 7.75-8" range but with cargos i'd be ok with something in the 8.25-8.5" hem range. I have average sized feet and the current cargo iteration would swallow them to the point that i'd look like a little kid wearing dad's pants.

. . . .  my contribution to the cargo pants convo is to make some ripstop BDU pattern pants . . . . .

For those of you without military experience BDU is Battle Dress Uniform (USA) in Uk its DPM Disruptive Pattern Material. In layman's terms it's simply Camouflage  😉

Actually, BDU is the uniform design, not the camouflage pattern.

I definitely meant solid colors, and not camo, lol!

I think most people after a taper suggested the 888 cut as a guideline, which has the same amount of taper from knee to hem as the 777 (obviously from a wider start)

The 888 cut looks about right.

                  Ditto.

I feel like tapering would take them from being a practical garment, to a purely fashion piece.

EDIT: I should point out that all previous cargos have had a very slight taper (0.4ish") to avoid them looking flaired.
I was just trying to make the point that the main request on a taper was, in fact, as strong a taper as the 777 cut.

As a motorcycle brand, I'd think a taper on cargos makes sense for IH, if not even a way of cinching the leg holes closed to block air and inhibit flapping when riding.

I love the cut of the swedish Serge cargos and wouldn't change it too much. Even the lady likes them, and she scoffs at all things cargo as "dad pants."

                      Love the ripstop idea.

Anything else would be silly. It’s relative of course, the 634 cut has taper, but you wouldn’t call them «tapered jeans» for that. Obviously, my personal preference is the cut as it was on the last few iterations.

As far as a 777 or 888 taper goes I think that would be considered «on point» as the kids say, and I can’t see that being Haraki-san’s concern. He seems to like his military gear to stay traditional in cut, with the biker tweeks being highly practical (pocket openings, snaps etc).

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't cargos sell slow? Plus no interest from retailers? Perhaps this is because of the wider cut previous versions had. A more modern cut like the 888 might sell better. I for one would instantly cop a pair but if they were like previously versions I wouldn't.

Regarding the taper: I was not looking for a heavy taper, but the discussion that led to the birth of the 633 & 888 was, that in sizes above 34 the hem gets super wide on straight cuts like the 634 or the cargoes, while the Silhouette of the wearer doesn't require that. That's why the cargoes look ace on the small japanese guys, but like huge baggy Pants on westerners with size 34+.

A hem of 8,5" in size 36 would be my ideal measurement (instead of 9,5"), so they would not drag on the floor and rub at the legs while walking. But that said, I'd also get them if they were the old cut. But when you do a rerun, it could be cool to add a Little Twist.

BTW, I'm not a fan of ripstop at all, maybe because it reminds me to much of Carhartt.

That actually hadn't occurred to me, probably because I always have mine full length and do about three full rolls. In that respect a taper might not make much difference to me… A good point, well made.

Max makes me think of an interesting general principle, and perhaps this already occurs in some fashion: diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks: progressive tapering within the same "cut" as measurements go up to account for the flaring effect of larger pants. Straight at small sizes, more and more tapered at larger ones, in recognition of the fact that ankles don't necessarily scale as dramatically as waists across bodies.

Duck makes me think of Carhartt, in fact it is far more associated in my mind with them than ripstop, where ripstop is more of a military thing to me. But I don't hate Carhartt either. I definitely understand it's not for everyone, but it's a good way to ruggedize a light fabric.

                                        Think it, be it.
