Shit… you would tough to find a boss who would give you 20 hours in the US...

I worked about eight years in middle to upper management in the high school system and one of my teachers lost her teenage son in a car crash. This was in April. We just gave her the rest of the school year off, no questions asked. She came back to work in August. Squared it with the local authority after the fact. They didn't argue much.

My real issue with US business customs is the way they treat new mothers. It’s disgraceful. Sorry, perhaps this is bordering on political, and MODs can delete if they wish.

Full pay. Social services pay some of it, your employer pays the rest.

For the record, I personally don't consider this particular statement to be political as it's about the way employers treat their employees and differences in practice. That being said it does have the potential to be a political issue because it involves social policy and gender. But we'll deal with that if it happens  😉

No doubt, hell mothers to be as well. My ex was laid off from her job of several years when she got pregnant.  Of course they didn't outright tell her that and list that as the reason for termination but everyone knew that was the real reason she was let go.

It has it's moments @Matty123 I talk to my brother who now lives in Brooklyn and sometimes struggles for work, and often wonder how I'd get on there. The US system certainly keeps you sharp and driven, whereas I suspect Norway was blunted my competitive edge…

Like manufc said. It’s overrated. Work your balls off for what? If you, god forbid, had to move here. U would get your edge back. Sink or swim here. I bet I’d like Oslo. Eye contact and all.

              Maybe so. Maybe not

Oslo is… interesting. I always enjoy being there and have lots of friends there so I know the city quite well. It's a little too full of cool, self satisfied hipster types at the moment but still has a lot to offer and is very laid back. It's different up north.

So it’s exactly the same as South Alabama. Good to know

I’m comfortable with the blanket generalization that American employers/government/authority treats pretty much everyone like replaceable garbage. There’s very little empathy or compassion in the mindset here. This also trickles down into a lot of interpersonal relationships here in a way that’s super unhealthy. Not a fan.

Omg, not at ALL @Filthy! I was referring to a convo that was going on in this thread briefly, before, comparing the US to Norway.  Are you kidding, you're so kind!  I'm sorry that was confusing.

Nah…Norway sounds awesome.  The US system of working is overrated and keeps you on the path to cardiac arrest and other stress related illnesses.

I'm heading to the big island of Hawaii in a little under a month to visit a friend and I know there are at least a few people who know what's what.

Anyone have any suggestions of must see/do/eat things while I'm there?

Question for UK people. The Royal wedding has been covered here in the states constantly. I can only assume coverage over there must be bordering on ridiculous. My question is are the British people excited for this? Is it as important  as the American media is saying? Is there a lot of national pride involved? Just curious for my own learning.  Thanks
