Also, if I end up being a large in a workshirt, generally speaking would that make me a XL in westerns?

Not necessarily, once we work out your prefered measurements, we can compare them from shirt to shirt to find the right size

Actually, after having seen the comparison pics, I prefer the XL. However, something will have to be done with the sleeves.

Large looks much better than XL.  Maybe a medium would be the best size for you but as mentioned above, it depends on the fit of the shoulders and chest.

edit - In your post from last week you said you had an XXL and were thinking about sizing down to an XL.  If this is true then substitute large for medium in what I wrote above.

i'm pointing out the obvious here but have you measured any of your existing shirts and compared them to IH's fit charts? I think that would've saved you a lot of $ in the long run if you knew your measurements.

Yup… tried that at first but it seems a lot of my current shirts are kind of frumpy on me... never really noticed it till now which is kind of why it’s been hard for me to get this right...

Anyway, I decided on keeping the XL and warm or hot washing it... the L was just too tight around the waist and had some button pull around the midsection so it was a little uncomfortable for me.  Hopefully a warm/hot wash on the XL will help to shorten up the sleeves a little bit...

Keep the larger size and shrink it to some degree, you don't have this flexibility on the smaller size.

I always go for the larger size, because I want to be able to hot wash and tumble dry all my clothes. I have a couple of jeans that I treat more carefully, but overall ain’t nobody got time for that! Especially with UHF, I’ve always gotten about a half-size worth of shrinkage by just chucking them in the washer/dryer with everything else, and I’m happy with that.

my only issue with going for a larger size is that shrinkage may not occur across the board in the chest, sleeves and body. If the body length is too long and doesn't shrink a fair amount then the shirt would look ridiculous on me.

I can completely understand body length or sleeve length being an issue for most folks, but being 6'1" I tend not to think too much about it.  Mostly I have to watch out for things being too short.

understandable. there must be a metric that clothing companies use to determine body length on shirts. I'm 5'11 so if a shirt surpasses the 30" mark then it's too long and blousey on my frame. In that regard, IH does a perfect job determining body length on their tops.

After a warm wash medium dry fits pretty good. I'm guessing the sleeves shrunk about an inch and the shoulder maybe a point or two.
