Actually a lot of the elephant currently harvested is done to protect particular sub species of the animal. While some areas have been over hunted to near extinction, which many know, others are so overpopulated with breeds that ecosystems cannot sustain them.

Ecosystems around the world are no longer able to sustain any of the mega-fauna, though. The argument that hunters make about controlling populations always makes me queasy, no matter how much logical sense it makes. All animals are screwed, because humans are terrible, and we're everywhere. Maybe this should be in random rants? Lol
