We went to to zoo this weekend.  It rained, so most of the animals were inside.  But this guy came to check us out.  I think he spotted my spiffy selvedge denim and loopwheeled tee.

See, he's saying, "Quality goods, dude."

In the office yesterday marketing brought around a bag that they may end up branding for the engineers/consultants etc to use. 2 of us in my area were asked, another guy and myself. The other guy gave it a quick look and was like, yeah it's a bag. I had a quick look and could see it was a cheapie from China that had none of even the most basic things on a bag. So I asked, how much detail are you after, she said it all. I spent the next few minutes pointing out everything wrong with the bag, from no sternum strap, to un-removable waist straps, shitty shoulder straps, laptop sleeve facing wrong direction, and no padding as well as touching bottom. Zippers entry level YKK, no water proofing. Not even water resistant material, no where even near Cordura 600.

A few people started gathering and I didn't even realize what I was doing. After going on even further than above I looked up and handed the bag back asking if she wanted more tips. Everyone just looked at me like a freak wondering where the hell that'd all come from. Was like yeah, I've read a bit about bags before…just like all the other weird shit I read a lot about.....

      Totally outed myself, again. lol.

These things do happen, I found myself giving a lecture about dyeing techniques and supply chain ethics in a fabric store this morning…...then I realised what I was doing and felt a bit daft  😶

Did some research on Boondockers today.  Came across this brilliant image:

^ That is a brilliant image! Researching just for fun or is there a Wesco/IH Boondocker coming?

Jose Andres is ripping through Japan right now and its quite entertaining if you follow him on facebook. Infectious enthusiasm for all the local cuisines. In Hokkaido now.

Short answer- that's a screw up that won't last. The compensatory damages awarded were $16 million, the rest were punitive.  It's well established that punitive damages have to be proportional to the compensatory.  Reynolds will appeal and the total will get cut massively, possibly to even less than $16 million.

Of course, that won't make international headlines…

I just don't understand why people are being rewarded for being fucking idiots, even if they'll only fetch, say, a cool 15 mil…

I agree, Seul.  Especially now that the health hazards of smoking have been public knowledge for decades.  I'm not a huge fan of the tobacco companies, or anything, but if people want to continue smoking knowing the risk, how can the manufacturer be liable?

Well, the guy died in 1998, after 20+ years smoking, so the argument was that the company was deceptive back in the 70s and 80s, when he got hooked.  Then he was addicted and couldn't stop.  Since it was a civil case with a 6 person jury, they only had to convince 4 people that  Reynolds was probably mostly responsible.  It's not a bad case, just a ridiculous award, which, like I said, won't last when Reynolds appeals.
