OK.  So this is the gig (in rough terms) 2.5 - 3 mile open water swim in the sea in August.  Currently I can'y to 1/2 mile in the pool….

Not sure if anyone listens to any fitness podcasts, but I've been checking evidencemag.com's podcasts over the last couple of months and they're pretty interesting.

They either know what they're talking about, or offer different, research-based viewpoints.

For example, here's their article on how to get 6-pack abs: http://evidencemag.com/abs/

Here Giles, try this, its gentle, its hard and it works.

          • Get a chinup bar in the house and do press ups and chins each day trying to increase your count and your sets each day.  You'll be hard soon enough.

I do like what evidence magazine says about whole body exercises in principle, though I think they take it too far. It's simply false that deadlifts and squats engage your core as much as targeted routines such as (my personal favorite) the stick crunch.

            Think it, be it.

Pull ups are great, I just broke away from work to do some push pull in the forms of overhead presses and pullups.

You get shoulders, lats, biceps, and a bunch of complementary impact on other muscles. Though it isn't the ab shredder this guy would have you believe, unless you're doing leg lifts with it or something.

                But yeah, they do suck.

I'd throw soy protein in as another option for Giles.

I'm with Mclaincausey on blending proteins. There's research that suggests that the different absorption rates for (say) whey, soy and casein mean the body remains in a muscle building state for longer.

For recovery, common-or-garden chocolate milk is the food of the gods! It's got the right mix of carbs and proteins, and tastes a lot better than most powders. There are scientific studies to support this. Wing-co seems pretty good, but appears to have been discontinued in recent weeks. 😞

Yeah, carbs and fats can shuttle protein into the muscles too. Optimum Nutrition Gainer is cool because it blends proteins with different absorption rates with good fats and carbs.

good one G., need to step up my game as well again…

started on Monday to going back to the gym.
it's the gym from the school we're refurbishing for the next 3 years (2013-2016) and I an use it for free and have my own keys to it as well...

…not the best and it sure hasn't everything, but I'm able to train for free, train every muscle I can/want and it's not even a one minute walk away from the door of my office on site... 🙂

The close proximity of a gym makes a huge difference. Mine is only a five minute drive or a 15 minute bike ride away so I don't have many excuses.

i live right next to a gym (walking distance = 32.5m) and haven't been there once…i' ve checked it out one evening but i can't really see myself joining it. doesn't looks appealing to me, even though it has (almost) everything!

when i'm joining a gym i need to be sure that i won't be bothered by some kinda trainers or any other person trying to school me while working out...it's only me and my music, doesn't need anything else!

I recently changed gyms and proximity is key. I'm probably 300m now door to door.

I've also changed my workout regimen to compound movements. Pullups are also my kryptonite, so I start each workout with those (well, chin ups, actually), followed by bench press, squat, military press, plank and crunches.

Total workout time is about an hour. I'm never going to be huge, but it's a decent workout to maintain health and overall strength.

I love my gym. Next door to work (I can literally go in without going outside), I never have to wait on a rack, no dicks there, the owner's great, 24 hour access, and it has everything you need.

I don't have 24* access but I like to work out in the afternoons which works well with my work schedule. Like Zwer I'll never be huge but I want to stay strong. I started doing more legs last fall and my lower body strength has grown exponentially. Squat days are now my favorite work outs.

I used to hate squats, but after a running injury I spent most of last year learning how to squat properly and slowly adding weight. Now I love them.

This year it's bench press. I've always been a dumbell press guy for fear of dropping the barbell on myself. Time to change that.
