@MM Nothing lost, and I'm happy Gustin have my $ to help them better evolve. Tons of people like their product, they're a great entry into the market, and evolve based on customer subscription/desire. I love the model of direct from owner to the market (part of what I love about this forum/IronHeart). The Kickstarter model is something I think takes a lot of balls. The get a campaign funded takes months/years of research.

If I'd not touch any selvedge denim, I'd be happy. In terms of quality they remind me of the newer(2011+) APC's.

quality costs, i agree wih that statement; unfortunately, for the most part the consumer isn't paying for quality but instead for a name & a certain status which comes with that brand name.

i'm getting in on a shirt as i can never have enough blue oxfords &  will report back when it lands.

A few years ago I popped into the pub and bumped into an old acquaintance.  This ensued:

Him - "Wow those jeans are really nice, quality looks brilliant, what are they?"
          Me - Iron Heart
Him - "Shame, I'll never buy a pair"
          Me - "Why?"
Him - "Never heard of the brand"

          What a twat…....

to sh!t up the thread even more it's a few sets of folks but the most fun to me are as follows:

trailblazers always looking for the newest product thing.  it can be tech or clothing or art or furniture but if it is obscure they want it

traditionalist who only get things which are well established & have a history story.

can't say all people fall into those sects, but it does cover a large portion of the folks i deal with on the day to day.

to get on track with these Gustin folks it's funny that they seemed to have been employed by "fashion" brands, so maYbe quality isn't the first thing on their minds

Close to my mark. I like trying things, but am a sucker for ol' faithful and routine. I stray, but stick with the good thing. In most things in my life that holds true..

I posted in Recent Purchases about a pair of 16.5 cone denim Gustin's that I bought a few weeks ago. I've put a few days wear on them and I'm initially happy with them.

About the quality concerns - what issues are people noticing?

I thought the sewn in belt loops, half-lined pockets, and selvedge inner fly details were nice touches. That said, I do have a problem right at the base of the fly where the sewing could be reinforced better. That's the only issue I've seen so far. Given their price point, they are a good value for the money.

They don't currently participate in the heavy weight denim arena. 18 oz is as heavy as they go. I bought a nearly new pair of their 18's and didn't like them at all. That run was pretty crappy denim. Too soft. Too open. Didn't feel at all like raw denim. Then again, it could have been my purchasing mistake - it was sold as 18 oz but not "raw" - so perhaps my expectations were set incorrectly. (I sold that pair pretty quickly.)

^  Could you elaborate on why you think this, Ben?  I'm not reallly following.

I just think that it lacks passion. If you're a designer you should put out things out that you want to make, not something that the majority of your market base says they want. Sure it's a good idea to take into account what your customers think, but to me it shows an emotional detachment from the product if any one product of yours has an equal chance of being made. What about that thing that probably no one will get but you love so much that you need to see it realized? Where's the risk?

One time haraki stated that "my purpose is to make jeans."  I love that. On the other hand, I think that gustin's statement would read more along the lines of "Our purpose is to produce the cheapest (monetarily) product that the lowest common denominator will preorder"

I can see GMB's perspective and this rings true for anyone who appreciates the passion behind IH denim and works.

That said I don't think any less of Gustin because of their take on production. They choose the fabrics, they design the goods and if it's economically viable -enough people commit before an item goes to production- then the schizzle happens. This model accelerated their growth and means of getting their passion and design out to as many as people as possible. I don't think it's fair to say they lack passion. Their products are from the same genre of hard wearing Americana that I love but that doesn't necessarily mean I love everything they do, like any brand. I say more power to them and any interviews or features I have read with their founders brims with an appreciation and passion for what they do.
