I'm kind of confused by what "fashion oriented" means. Obviously we buy Iron Heart etc. because we think it looks nice. What's the difference between a thick horizontal striped shirt and a wabash shirt aesthetically? They're all patterns to me…

Prison Stripes are big with Harley bikers in Japan, it is not fashion or at least not as Haraki views it.

prison stripes are just huge in the chopper/biker scene everywhere right now, not just japan
theres even a company that is basically doing just that right now, t's, long sleeve t's and sweaters.
its a nod to a bunch of characters in old 60's chopper flicks

don't you know there ain't no devil? only god when he's drunk!

                Sorry for the derail…

Prison stripes are/were a lot wider(they are suppose to imitate actual prison bars) than what Haraki is holding. I know it's just his interpretation of prison stripes but those look more like Breton Stripes. Which I'm sure most people here would know were mostly worn by (French)sailors as that is where they originated.

Original Prison Stripes (Auburn Prison)(around 1900)

What I think of as Prison Stripes

Breton Stripes(two variations)(I personally love these stripes)

                Pulled from the web:
"The striped breton shirt as we know it today came into being shortly following the 27th March, 1858 Act of France which introduced the navy and white striped knitted shirt as the uniform for all French navy seaman in Brittany."

"The striped shirt was originally a naval sailor’s uniform, designed to help distinguish the sailors from the waves so you could find them more easily when they fell overboard. At the time, all the French navy hailed from Brittany, so the shirt was coined the “Breton” shirt and displayed 21 stripes – one for each of Napoleon’s victories."

"On a trip to the coast, Coco Chanel became inspired by the sailor’s clothing and used it in her 1917 nautical line. Chanel designed her Breton top for ladies to be worn with flared trousers as a stark contrast to the then-popular corseted dress look for women. By the 1930s, the Breton stripe had been elevated to “haute couture” status, making it a popular choice for fashionable upper class ladies."

Hence the fashion oriented comment. I don't think I've ever called Iron Heart a "fashion brand" but I feel like I've read Giles say they weren't on numerous occasions which is the only reason I'm giving him a hard time.

Cool info on stripes, Urb. In my ignorant state I had no idea all these variations had names.

I don't know if you can see it but this prison stripe has herringbone in it. Not on the Breton striped pocket. A cool idea.

                                    Think it, be it.

I think there must be an inherent difference in peoples definition of fashion.  I would think that fashion is effectively following a trend.  Just because we are releasing a prison or Breton stripe and coloured selvedge chambray shirts does not mean we are following a trend, or am I missing something?  Haraki makes what he wants to make, with no reference to what may or may not be the trend, the fashion or what may be coming down the pipe from other clothing companies.

We make Type III jackets and always have.  Last season Type III's in UK were super fashionable and super trendy, does that means we are a fashion brand?

When I say we are a not a fashion brand.  I mean that we make no nod to what anyone else is doing and what you walk out of the shop in today you will look just as good in in 15 years.  Our clothing, imo is timeless, that is the antithesis of fashion.
