plus the body work i just had done
sucks
but i'll just cop onlineOuch, I hear ya. I almost had to cancel this trip as well. Jeep needed new engine (spun a rod bearing), tires, transfer box was shot, new fluids all around, brake pads and rotors all around had to be replaced. Couple of the things were covered under warranty, but still wound up spending over $6k

As was pointed out to me by Urbanwoodsman, I might not need to buy a US specific sim for NY, as if the people I am contacting have iPhones I can simply use iMessage. I know this covers Urb, G+P, and I think Landon, if anyone else has an iPhone and would like my number to use iMessage please send me a PM.
I can receive messages, and simply duck into any Starbucks to return them.

it uses wifi or your data to make calls and texts to anyone else with viber. and i believe that includes none iphones
like galaxies and suchI can vouch for Viber. When my wife was in Iran, we were using it to communicate.

There are no (legal) bars or clubs in Iran, all the bars and clubs that existed in the 60's and 70's were replaced by ice cream / dessert / milk shake "bars". You go, hang out, have a milk shake, talk, etc. It's all very clean and wholesome fun but terrible if you come from anywhere else in the world where you expect to go out and have drinks and get crazy at night.
On the flip side, Iran has turned into a place where you can get some of the most amazing and well made (western style) desserts in the world. -
