Today, I asked Tom and Haraki who are both garment designers to show us how a garment designer/pattern maker measures a pair of jeans and a shirt.

I did this, as the measurements on The IHJP site and the IHUK site are different and we wanted to understand why.

They showed us how every pattern maker (in Japan at least) does it.  There were some notable variations with how we do it, and for that matter, the majority of online stores that I know, do it.

It is clear that the way they do it is more accurate than the way we had been doing it.

Beatle took photos of Tom doing the measuring.  At some point soon we will update the website with an updated "how we measure" section and I will update all the measurements on the individual product pages.

This is no small undertaking, but it will result in more accurate info…

Lot of old info will be valueless….on many topics. Let's hope it won't create huge misunderstandings in newbies who read old posts and try to figure out their sizing based on that and new forcoming info on the website.

Or are the differences minimal? which would be a good thing.

More accurate rather than major.  I don't think that it will cause huge misunderstandings, but it is the right thing to do, so we will do it.  The biggest difference is that the Japanese do not incude the waist band when specifying front and rear rise (which made me understand when I have specced jeans in the past remotely, they have come out wrong  :D)
