When Haraki does these side projects, does he have a team close by that mocks them up so that he can oversee them personally making tweaks to the design as it's being put together? What happens to the mock up's that don't come to fruition?

Oh, and when he showed me the IH-805 sample, I thought he had been smoking something a stronger that his normal Marlborough Menthols. But he made them anyway, no retailers took any from the initial run, and they sold like absolute crap, then (with the help of the @madmike effect), they took on a life of their own, and basically we cant make enough of any fabric iteration.....

I would not call it a side project. Doing stuff like this IS what he does. He'll spec it and then send it off to be sampled, he'll get it back and make any changes he feels are necessary, and repeat until he is happy enough to either take to production, or assign it to his "stuff that never quite made it but may one day" rail on the mez in Hachioji.

And even then, he will not stop tweaking, the IHJ-79 has been through a few iterations, as has the mountain parka....

Love all that. What’s amazing is that this kind of restless innovation doesn’t turn out more retch-inducing items like this one.

@Giles Final question and I'll stop...how often does he make stuff like this that doesn't make it to the stores? I can imagine his success rate is quite high (and why all of you guys are still in business).

Retch-inducing is not necessarily a bad thing. I am sure than the US has a similar product to our Ford Sierra Mk I.

It was launching to howls of derision from consumers and journalist alike in 1982. And was promptly nicknamed "The Jelly Mould. It was awful and would never sell, we said....

                  image.png

It's hard to understand that reaction now (because it looks sort of normal now) because it spawned a whole new generation of jelly mould cars. What was retch worthy and a thing to mock then, is the norm a few years later.....

I would like to see a pullover Anorak, made with the same fabric as the shorts we done last year (IH-736), I thought the combo of the ripstop and hydrophobic coating was a cool idea and could be applied to a lightweight S/S jacket.

Anoraks have been mentioned enough before that I’m surprised we haven’t seen one yet.

Pullovers in general seem oft-requested—popover shirts have been requested a lot too. I can’t recall one having been made.

I hate the idea of having to pull over to don and doff outerwear so for me it has to offer something to justify the hassle. I can adjust to changing conditions easily with a zip hoodie by adjusting the zipper and more easily removing it, but I have to take a pullover hoodie off entirely, over my head, to cool down.

IMO an anorak or hoodie can justify the hassle in two ways:

                              1. in scenarios where it is a weatherproof garment, by removing or reducing an entry point for wind or moisture or exit point for warmth

                              2. in any scenario, by adding pocketing that wouldn’t be possible with a vertical opening. That means a killer, very large kangaroo pocket and/or other pockets with closures

                              YMMV

                              Think it, be it.

Im not really into pullovers either, but a ripstop and hydrophobic coating rain jacket sounds cool

@Travis2375 agreed because it meets the first of my justifications for the hassle of pullover outerwear.

For a shirt you wear all day it’s not a big deal. That’s what a t shirt or a polo shirt is. For outerwear that goes on and off all day it needs to offer something for the hassle.

                                  Again just my $0.02

I think that the “Jest” would be cool and possibly more appealing to riders if it had snaps instead of buttons. I think Haraki mentioned that he thought riders would like it. This way you could size up,and wear it over a heavy IH hoodie. You could also employ vest extenders so it doesn’t flap around when riding,if you wanted it unbuttoned. And last but not least you could use the short sleeves for additional patch space. Snap down collars would be great as well. Harley will have this out next year.

Several years ago SOSO Bros. made a shirt for me and when it was assembled they put the sleeves on backwards. It was Giles who figured it out. They told me to keep the shirt and remade it for me. I decided to have my tailor turn their mistake into a short sleeve shirt. I’ve only worn it a couple of times. Just to illustrate how Haraki’s short sleeve Type III might be with snaps.
