I've been working on a cover version of this album with a couple friends off and on for a few years and the youtube algorithm blessed me with this tonight

Just thought I’d throw this up here for any Matthew Sweet fans. He had a stroke on tour and needs help.

@goosehd damn, sad to hear that.

Always felt kind of alone here in the UK as a fan of the dead, but watching films/reading about their story and sporadically speaking to folks I'd met at dead tribute shows in London, it was easy to feel like you knew each member of the band...

              Fare thee well.

@GraemeE I know most Deadheads will advocate for their live shows to be the definitive way to experience the music, but for me, there's just something so wonderful about listening to Workingman's Dead/American Beauty back to back on a certain kind of cool, sunny morning.

They conjure such vivid pictures in my mind of a far away land (America), decades before I was born, and just for an hour, allow me to escape to a sunshine daydream of a world where I roam free with nothing but the open road in front of me and memories of a long lost lover in the rear view mirror.

Brokedown Palace > Truckin' are the closing two songs on my funeral playlist, and I don't see that ever changing.

                  ♥

The live stuff (or at least the recordings I've heard) doesn't grab me as much.

That being said I have, and enjoy, every studio album from anthem to wake of the flood and a few stragglers from the later period

@GraemeE @T4920 there’s honesty so much live stuff that it’s sometimes (imho) hard to find what suits your fancy. My favorite live Dead iteration was the slim 5 piece that existed for a little while during 1971. Gator strat, lotta kinda southern rock influence, no Donna Jean. If I recall correctly these were the Houseboat tapes that were discovered — originally given to Keith Godchaux so he could learn the parts. Anyway, it rips and it’s my favorite shit.

For anyone not using Spotify, it’s Dick’s Picks 35.

                        RIP Phil ❤️

I love the website www.relisten.net which has every Dead show chronologically by year. Has the set list, and ratings of every recording. My Dead project last year was listening to as many New Years Eve shows as I could. Lots of times when I’m editing photos I’ll just pick a show and have it run in the background.

That might be part of the challenge for me although I do have fond memories associated with listening to shows on cassette.

When I was around 19 I spent a season working at a winery where the routine was that the owner handed you a homemade bong (made from a 7 up bottle) first thing in the morning and then proceeded to play dead tapes until quitting time.

@GraemeE I've listened to all the 'classics' when it comes to the live shows, and will occasionally stick a random Dick's Picks on, but I'd rather focus on discovering new music the venturing too deeply into the Dead rabbit hole, as much as I love 'em..

                                  Bumping Aoxomoxoa this morning though!

The first time I saw The Greatful Dead was December 1968,it was billed as a battle of the bands,at what at the time, was called the Village Theatre. It would eventually become The Fillmore East. It was Haight Ashbury vs Greenwich Village, with a band, I think called The Take 5,representing The Village. Much to my surprise The Dead had two drummers. They were truly amazing, but I couldn’t stay for their entire set as I had to get back to The Bronx by 12. Would see them many times after that, one of my favorites being when they played for free in Central Park with The Airplane and The Butterfield Blues Band.

There's a special kind of excitement I get for new Tyler, the Creator music. Might not be everyone's jam, but I'm not being hyperbolic when I say I genuinely think he's the best all round 'artist' of my generation.

Everything he's put out over the last 15 years oozes with personality and creativity, and if you can look beyond some of the moral miss-steps and controversies in the early days of his career, I can't think of anyone else in his lane that has had more consistent output over the years, whilst continuing reinvent themselves and evolve artistically.

The teaser alone for the new album blew me away... I hope the man gets into making movies one day as he's stated he's interested in doing.
