@Jett129 haha the red stitching really got me on this one. It almost appears like a crimson pink in the photos.

@Oaktavia Me too,100%. And I love that since all the shrinkage has been taken out, you can wash and dry, if you choose, with impunity.

If this new process of overdying overstock of flannels comes back every winter i will need a new wardrobe, i would go for the brown and yellow OD from this season ^^ @Oaktavia

@Raisinoux hah it is a super cool and innovative way to save the "extra" products and rebirth them into something better (imo). That and I can't think of other brands that overdye flannels, correct me if I'm wrong.

Can someone please explain the purpose/benefit of an over dyed fabric/flannel? Why is desirable, or undesirable? I've never owned one before. Thanks in advance.

I like the subtlety of the flannel design under the od, that it will evolve in an unknown and possibly interesting way, that the shrink is totally and completely out, and just cuz.

The od anni uhf I have feels warmer than some of my other ones maybe from how the process tightens up the fabric. Or it's just in my head.

@stichdown-shell I’ll go out on a limb here and say in all likelihood, there has never ever been an over-dyed flannel shirt before, and who knows there may never be any others, and 5 years from now people will be flat out begging for IH to do it again, and so many people will be saying the can’t believe they passed it up. And it’s not just any random flannel shirt,it’s,after all a flippin UHF. Enough from me. Someone correct me if I’m wrong about these being unique.

@pechelman I read your post and wasn’t 100% sure. I stand partially corrected because I do believe that down the road people will be asking for them to do it again. Thanks for setting me straight.

@Jett129 Thanks for your reply. I tried to find/google images of what an OD flannel would look like with some wear. I'm curious.

@pechelman @Jett129 there were also indigo overdyed flannels released sometime between 10 and 15 years ago. I can’t remember the number and I know I’ve seen them but a quick Google search doesn’t help.

@stichdown-shell Overdying has traditionally done with indigo denim jeans and shirts. It gives you a unique color of denim that's different than a normal black and it adds another color to the fading process. Black -> dark blue -> light blue -> white.

For the flannels, the black should fade to a lighter color and slowly reveal the original design hidden underneath.

One benefit is that since overdying is done with a hot liquid, it removes all the shrinkage.

A disadvantage is the environmental impact. This depends on the specific dye that is used and how it's disposed. I don't know enough about either of these to be a judge of exactly harmful it is.

@DrPat Thanks so much for making the effort and tracking this down. As much as I liked the shirt the one thing that made it a No Brainer, for me, was the fact that the sleeves had shrunk and the PtP measurement stayed the same, which is what Giles had posted way back in 2010.

Based on the success of those, I did overdye some more "slow-sellers" a few months later. I wish I could remember the lot numbers, but all I can remember is that they were mid-weight and we did them 🙂
