Buying doubles / backups: Wear both or save one unworn?
-
Hello, I hope I am posting this in the right place.
Six months ago I decided I needed to go on a jean buying binge. After spending a lot of money and having many misses I found 4 pairs of different styles that I love. So naturally being OCD I bought a spare pair of each
I have 4 pairs in rotation, and 4 identical pairs that are unworn.
A couple of the jeans styles are my daily beater work jeans. They are getting broken in nicely. Should I bust out the second pair and break them in to the level of my first pair or should I save them for later? First world problems I know, but I have been thinking about this for days. I'm more inclined to wear both pairs of each, broken in evenly.
What would you do?

I'd leave the spares unworn. Your preferences may change, your weight may change, you may decide to go minimalist and cut the rotation to only one or two pairs. If any of those things happen, you can sell the spare pairs more easily and for a better price if they're not beat up.
I've sold pairs that a year earlier I would have sworn I'd never sell. Selvedge denim is expensive and most of us buy more pairs than we should. Recouping some of that cost is always good, if you can.

I have 4 pair of jeans after dumping a fuck ton at Goodwill and I only wear one of those. I do wear other styles of pants (e.g., chinos today) but jeans-wise I am a monogamist. I did pull out my 634S and stare longingly at them for a moment this morning though….

You know, I like Whisky a lot. There's the strategy for collector's: buy three bottles. Drink one, save one for the collection and trade/sell one later.
I don't do this (in Whisky and clothes), as I think the purpose of these goods is to be enjoyed and used as intended. (I can really get pissed off thinking about how the best bottles have been never tasted as some rich collectors just keep them in their safes.)
I would not stock multiple items for future purposes, but if you are worried about missing stuff and have the funds - go ahead. I found that there's always too much nice stuff on the market - whenever you really need new Jeans you will have plenty of stuff to spend your money on.
But as you already have them - I'd Keep them unworn and use them as backup or trade item, when the time is ready.

Max and @Megatron1505 I'm the fecker who buys things to collect ;). I don't drink, but cellar wine, just because. I also have some very nice whisky from OS that I have no intention of doing anything with other than leaving on a shelf. Most of my older toys aren't opened, I buy to look at, not to use.

Masterful de-baiting there…

Besides the logic that everyone else has brought to the table for keeping your spares unworn–I think the main reason to hold off on wearing your extra pairs of favorite jeans would be to prolong the amount of time you get to wear that perfection. Once you wear the first pair into the ground, if you find yourself still loving the denim and the cut (and fitting into the same size!) you'll be able to enjoy the whole process all over again!

Well, we're all striving for the same thing:the perfect pair of jeans. So if you find them imagine your disappointment to know you haven't got a spare pair! The chances are that if you find the perfect pair, you won't need to wear the spare for a long time because you won't be able to take the 1st pair off.
When I collected LVC, and before that, US made 501 shrink-to-fits, I was W36 in STF which had a bit of room but I could fit W34. So to allow for putting on weight and taking it off, I always bought W34, W35, W36 and W38. I've even got a few pairs of W40 for wearing over the top when its cold, and some W31 and W32 when I took up sport! L38 (which I preferred as, L36 could come up a bit short, became hard to find except in W38….but of course, you need to have 6 pairs of each size in each vintage!
And then, of course, there were the discounts American Classics gave me and the carte blanche one afternoon to rummage in the storeroom at Cinch! Hey ho - suddenly you have a collection!

Wasn't baiting, just expressing my truth in a 1 liner. I've seen you call out how much it annoys you a few times, but didn't think you were aware I was one of them. I'm sure it doesn't change your view either, I don't expect it to. Intent of flagging it @Megatron1505 was to help show some diversity of personalities that can share the trait. It's not just 1 type of person who collects, nor is the motivation always the same. I've felt you've always had a black and white stance on it (and so be it), but wanted to show there is some grey. #nobaitonlymeat

s0 pepperco, have you decided on what you are going to do?

Interesting to see various points of view on this, as I'm likely one of those shades of grey. As without functionality, I wouldn't pick something up, yet I always collect enough to have options. Numerous like pairs wouldn't be my thing, but I''ll collect across the weight spectrum to serve whatever need may arise. This is true of nearly everything I buy, and if it no longer works within that frame I'm quick to rid myself of the excess. Some would still see the volume of what I own and think it too much, after all who NEEDS 10 pocket knives? But to me, they all have real application depending on what is needed.
