Catch of the day [Fishing]
-
Popped out for a couple of hours this morning to fish the flood tide….
Tasty tidbits

didn't catch a ton on Saturday, but the bass was about 4.5 lb. and a great time on the water.

@giles what is that pink line you are using? Is it saltwater specific? Braid, Mono, Flourocarbon? reason for the coloration?
-
It's braid. Sufix Pro 18lb. Super-duper thin (0.12mm) and silky smooth. It casts a country mile. I tie the braid to a 3-4 foot 15lbs fluorocarbon leader, using a uni knot (10 turns in the braid, 4 in the flouro). To the business end of the flouro I tie on a breakaway mini link https://www.veals.co.uk/acatalog/breakaway-mini-link-4196.html . Makes swapping over lures easy, even in the dark.
Pink because I like pink - no sensible reason.
For my big tropical fish fishing, I effectively have the same set up, but I'm using 130lbs braid attached to a 200lb mono leader with an FG knot (it's a super strong knot which has a very low profile), I can have a leader of 14 feet or so, so the knot is still on the spool when I power up the cast). The braid I use is multicoloured, so a different colour every 5 meters. The type of fishing I do requires super long casts, so the multi-coloured line helps me gauge how well (read, how far) I have cast and I can then make any appropriate adjustments to my casting technique on the next cast.

@giles you are basically Jeremy Wade with one helluva fashion sense. Thank for the incredible details.
I can tell you could walk up cold on a stage in front of a room full of people and have someone say "fishing, one hour, go!!!" and not sweat a drop talking about this wonderful sport.
cheers

Somebody go fishing dammit. I can’t go and I’m across the street from the beach and it’s bait city cuz of lobster pots.
-
Thanks @Fadez

Haha. I know it’s not anywhere cool as your guys rigs or catching but it’s something. Next time I’m hanging out with my buddy Taylor in my hometown, I’ll get some photos of his fly fishing room. It’s a whole room dedicated to making flies. That is if the baby hasn’t taken over [emoji23] Worst case scenario is I go fishing with my dad

My nephew and I caught a bunch today. Cold and breezy early fall fishing when all the recreational boats are put away for the year is a great trade off.

Thanks @sabergirl the fishing was great.
Unfortunately my Loombreakers aren’t that worn in yet. These are some N&F that were my first venture into raw denim. Much too large in the waist now, I should probably make my Lb’s fishing and horse pants, I just don’t quite destroy my IH denim yet like you amazing animals.

congrats @Giles awesome fish. Give us some more specifics on the style of fishing to catch these. Are you trolling? how long was the fight? do these sharks jump like Marlin?
-
Fresh mackerel caught on the way out. Filleted flapper style and fished under a float on a barbless 10/0 circle hook. 400lb wire bite trace, 12feet of 175lb wire rubbing leader, 100 yards of 100lb monofil tied onto PE6 braid. We set up 4 rigs, one bait at a depth of 200ft, one at 100ft, one at 50ft and one at 30ft, then spread those at varying distances from the boat, shallow to deep. It's then a crap shoot as to which bait is taken. Let the fish run, tighten up after the fish has run and 9 times out of 10, you'll have the fished hooked cleanly in the scissors. Blues dive and do not jump. The fight was about 10 minutes, but I put serious pressure on the fish, I have seen 120's take people 2 hours before. I'm a great believer if getting the fight over as soon as is possible, lessen the build up of lactic acid in the fish and give it a better chance of recuperation. I use my 300-500gm jigging rod and reasonably large fixed spool reel.
Here I am playing a smaller fish the day before….
In the background is HMS Lancaster who was on live ammunition firing exercise. It was firing 4.5" 21kg shells at twice the speed of sound. Holy fuck that was both deafening and entertaining (we were not in the shells path, choopers had flown over the shells flight path earlier getting boats to move out of the way)

Thanks for all the details. Sounds like fun. My wife has always asked if i wanted to go on a saltwater fishing trip and i say "not really", you are changing my thought process.
side note: I think I see the IHV-16
