@Steve A funktastik recommendation! A proper blaster to start the day with! When checking out her album on Apple Music I've also now discovered their Music From The Big Cigar playlist which was also an awesome series on Apple TV - a double win! Cheers!

@SKT - REM is one of my fav bands of all time. In 1987 my best friend’s older brother - who had a local band that was influenced by Husker Du, the Mats, REM, Guided by Voices, and others - turned me onto a mixed tape that included so many great tunes from that era - ie, Alex Chilton from Pleased to Meet Me; a few greats from Fables, Life’s Rich Pageant, and Document.

Several years later I discovered who Big Star was - and experienced the real Alex Chilton. Highly recommend that everyone with an interest in this genre to give a list to Big Star’s “#1 Record”. Classic.

This was around the time that I was also intrigued to the Dead Milkmen - a Philly treasure. Saw them a number of times. Of course they are a fun “punk” band, much different from those mentioned above, but worth a listen when you’re in the need of some smart, satirical, and often ridiculous lyrics from Rodney Anonymous and Joe Jack Talcum. Good times.

@MTpockets oh man so much good music in your post. And yeah, Fables, Document and Life’s Rich Pageant are for sure my favorite REM albums. And I discovered Big Star exactly as you did…after loving The Replacement’s “Alex Chilton”. I need to go on a Dead Milkman trip too. A few other bands I loved during the 80’s were X, The Cult, The Smithereens, The Plimsouls…some great music in that era!

@SKT The Smithereens are a band that I would have loved to have played drums for. Not that there was anything wrong with the drummer or I thought I could have done it better. I just love their music.

@Jett129 I absolutely love The Smithereens. I wore out their first two albums…”Especially for You” and “Green Thoughts” (posting a pic in the wax thread of these) And I can totally hear their similarities with Sorrows...you would fit right in. Melodic, propulsive rock with great guitars. And I remember you told me that Marshall Crenshaw has been touring with them…would still like to see that if they are still going

I started high school in 1990 so that was the perfect time musically to really develop a foundation for great “college rock” post new wave bands. Which flowed seamlessly into punk and grunge. What a great time to be young.

Your post in the Vinyl thread made me feel like you may appreciate this next one, very different btw, but he does some amazing jazz as well.
I was already familiar with John Zorn, but my friend turned me on to this album.
                                          It is awesome imho.
Wondering how many other weirdos are in here that like this kind of stuff.

@Matt - I couldn't have said it better myself. I also started HS around the same time (in '87) - and I also went to a school with a lot of folks that introduced me to old school rap - I played basketball and ran track if that helps paint a picture - so I was able to experience a tremendous catalog across various categories. It helps me "school" my girls on what real music is - not the mumble rap of today or the ridiculous auto-tune nonsense that everyone seems to have in their bag.
