I’m thinking of buying this Patagonia Atom Sling pack and was curious what your thoughts are? I like my Patagonia down jacket a lot and like their mission statement and that this pack is made from recycled materials. Only $59 too. I’m leaning heavily towards Patagonia but wanted to know if there were other companies out there you’d recommend? I take my son to the state fair every summer and this pack would be very functional for those occasions

While I’m not a fan of sling packs, I am a huge fan of Patagonia. I have the 25L black hole day pack. It’s the best day pack I’ve ever had.

        Maybe so. Maybe not

I was mainly interested in something compact. I used to carry a backpack around with me at the fair and that got a little annoying over the course of 4-5 hours of walking around.

My main gripe about these packs is a single shoulder backpack starts to wear on that shoulder after awhile. A two shoulder can be a one shoulder or a two shoulder and you can change from right to left if one starts to get raw.

Not very heavy….under 5 lbs. In the past I would carry some spare clothing for my son, a water bottle and some snacks. This time I plan on reducing the load so that I’m carrying less, but have something compact to carry stuff like my wallet, keys and snacks/water. The back pack I’ve been using, while not uncomfortable, still felt cumbersome. I just want something smaller

I keep one of these in my glovebox for when I get "Granddoug I want to go (insert random request from a 4 year old here)"

Been thinking of getting one of these for padding around Vegas/spelunking with the dogs. I have one of their chest packs and I'm pretty impressed with it's build quality

I'm looking to get a pair of engineer boots one of these days, but the jeans I have are a bit narrow at the opening for them. So, I was thinking about getting a pair from IH. What style do you all find works best for these types of boots?

Huge question! The simple answer is any and all depending on personal taste, style and what kind of look you want to rock.

What IH cuts do you wear? What is your inseam? Which boots are you considering?

As do I on occasion. Today in fact:

I think the 666 is a good cut for engineers. It’s the golden middle way. Not to flappy but wide enough that the jeans fall clear from the boot shaft.

That being said you see guys rocking wide hemmed 634 style jeans with high cuffs and tapered, narrow last engineers (check «vintage_engineer_boots» on IG). The IH .jp crew do the big, wide last, bump toe, double mids with long hemmed wide jeans to great effect.

I really like narrower hems (777, 555) with Wesco’s MP last, but it is not for everyone, nor will I claim that it looks great on me, it probably doesn’t, but I just dig it a lot. Check our «fjorde» on IG for a guy that really kills it in 555’s and Wesco boots.

My personal happy place right now is the 888 cut with engineers. The point is though, there are loads of different ways of doing it. Just get a pair, start wearing them with your favourite jeans and have fun working it out from there.

Thanks @Giles and @neph93 for the replies. I was actually thinking of the 666. I normally wear the 555, and while I love the cut, I couldn't fit the shaft of the boot through the hem comfortably. I think that the 666 might give me the "silm" aspect of the 555 while a wider hem. I will also check out the 888s, too, @neph93. I didn't really look at those.

@Wlemon speak of the devil…I wore my sz 36 555 01s today with my Vibergs. I prefer them wit my 888s, but I still think they look ok. Given I'm a larger waist, I appreciate the hem is wider too...

One of the reasons I wondered about your inseam was that if you dont cuff like Mr.T here and have a long inseam that doesn’t require much hemming then it will be a struggle. Cuffing or losing four inches (like I have to) gives you a little more wiggle room.

It’s also worth mentioning that not all Engineer boots are the same. Stuart’s Viberg’s have a relatively short shaft and beautiful but lightweight leather. I can squeeze my 555’s over my burlap Wesco’s (5oz), and just about over my IHWE-5 (9” shaft), but my lined Boss in 7.5oz oil tanned is a non-starter.

Reason being is I have been considering getting a pair for this winter after seeing this build from S&S a while ago. Only worry is if they might look a bit daft at Size 7.5D. Chris said I can get the shaft cut a touch narrower than standard but I am on the fence!

Pictures with a camera indoors are just not doing the color justice.
