The shrink-test specimen looks like it didn't take too kindly to machine-washing. Why might that be, in this particular case?

The fabric is unwashed and only lightly sanforised so shrinkage was expected. The advice with this is to treat as raw.

Yes but I was alluding to some pretty evident marbling in the post-wash photos.

I am not sure that a machine wash is needed for this sort of jacket. Machine washing is of course more likely to cause this sort of marking, and we have to try to maximise shrinkage to give you the top end of the shrinkage spectrum without boiling the clothing.
