Reclaimed pitch pine boards (sawn from old joists).  Les and I will build the staircase from the existing house (which has ancient pitch pine boarding) to the new kitchen out of these - I manage to get some 11inch wide boards.  What is left over will repair the ones we screwed-up, lifting the boards to run the services to the new build….

@louisbosco I had underfloor heating in an apartment I rented in London, and it was pretty good.

You can hook it up to a heat pump for environmentally friendly heating (not that you'll need it in Perth), or run chilled water through it to cool a room.

Though personally I'd prefer to build a Passivhaus, which doesn't need active heating or cooling…

wouldn't need thick jackets in perth too but it's nice to have 😉
haha. i suppose it feel comfy when the floors are heated. especially when i've always loved polished concrete floor and i think they do get really cold when the temps do drop..

Was looking into building a small passivhaus before back in Michigan making the leap to Hawaii.  Love the concept, and the passive homes I've been in were all cozy as heck in the winter…

@louisbosco decent insulation and passive design would allow the concrete floor's thermal mass to hold heat or remain cool in the summer.

@emceeQ you could always build one in Hawaii. The design would be more about cooling, though.

One thing that annoys me about Australia is that building standards are terrible here. Double glazing, which has been standard in Europe for decades is rarely used, and houses are often cold and drafty in winter.

                        It's a funny old world.

The Saturday before last Les, @Steve and I got the lantern onto the roof.

I was ecstatic, we were ahead of schedule.  And I had made a great big list of things that Les could do whilst I was out of the country.

Sunday, Les texts me from hospital, he's on a drip and had he not been bullied into going to A&E by his wife, may have died.  We think it was a spider bite that went bad.

He was let out on Wednesday and told not to work until Monday.

So he was due here yesterday morning.  I got a text "My dad died last night, I won't be in"…....Holy fuck, what a week for poor Les.

He phoned me today.  He'll be in tomorrow.  Trooper.

                          Take care out there.

A few years back I got a pin prick sized puncture wound from something while clearing an area of scrub land behind my home. A day later my arm went hot,red prickly and a red line started to show and grow slowly up my arm. I went to the doctor and the look on her face said it all!  ???

They put me on some high strength antibiotics, she even made sure she watched me take the first one and nagged me to ensure I completed the course.

A bad infection can be very serious, it's worth being aware of the signs.  😉

Exactly what happened to Les.  The Doc said that had he left it even one more hour it was 50:50 whether he would have died….

In Les's absence, we have poured the liquid screed and got on with first-fix electrics.  I took the opportunity of adding some jury-rig lighting so that if that lazy sonofabitch ever comes back to work, he'll be able to see what he is doing.

Tomorrow Carl and the brickies should lay the coping stones.  They are 890x360x100 (one-weathered to 75), so we will have an interesting discussion in the morning as to how we get them to the top of the scaffold.

Les should also be in, so we can get on with his long list of things to do….
