I've got a pair of heavy-ish sashiko sweat pants that I can only wear in winter. I would assume the shirt would be similar
-
For reference, I usually wear a XXXL or XXXXL in Iron Heart. In the Sashiko I went with a XXL because I prefer a more tailored look/fit. I also never plan on wearing another shirt, even a T-shirt, underneath if I can help it.
It really just depends on how you like to wear your clothing. For me the most important measurement is pit to pit. If that fits right, I can usually make everything else work.
-
@FlavourFade I know. But it helps to get other's opinions. Numbers don't always tell the whole story.
-
@Denimhead-0 and @northsouthdenimguy thanks.
The Wills has gussets in the back, so that might help. I'm going to email Ship John to see if they have any advice.
-
@nixage the differences I See from wearing my townes and for example my IHSH-33-BLK or 295ib is that it's cut more like a work shirt so chest waist and opening are very similar in width, the sleeves are shorter and the shoulder a little more narrow but the wider biceps helps a little with that I think
-
My only sashiko are a pair of Naked & Famous sashiko pants, and they are some of my softest and most breathable pants. Kinda makes me wonder with everyone saying theirs is a winter-only fabric
-
@FlavourFade Oh, that helps. I was hoping it was cut more like the IH western shirts. If the chest and opening are anywhere close to each other on the townes then it might not be for me. thanks!
-
Got my black one today and thinking of trying to get some shrink out but not sure if I should wait until it actually needs a wash. It looks good except it's very long (like all Townes seem to be) and I have room in other places to allow for shrinkage and a tightened up fit. Thanks to @hgering27 and @northsouthdenimguy for posting your experiences.
-
Having extra room is different for everybody. I’d like to see a fit pic before telling you what to do, but for someone like me who normally won’t machine wash and certainly cannot machine dry most of my shirts, I had no problem in doing it to this piece.
If you have an extra inch or two in every measurement, I would not worry about washing and drying it to get a better fit

Someone complemented my “vintage” Shipjohn hat today… is this thing really that old??

-
@Go-For-Chill I personally would not call it winter only. Buttoned up under a denim jacket it’s definitely cozy. But I’ve worn mine open with just a t shirt in the summer and it’s perfect for that
-
@northsouthdenimguy here is a fit pic. Looking at photos and given my wife's feedback I think the shirt looks fine as is (again a bit long) but I can also still fit it over a Samurai Sashiko work shirt (which I'm wearing today). But I wouldn't typically wear this kind of shirt over one of those. I prefer a tee.

-
Looks awesome! I’d wash it and dry it on Hot! And it’ll be perfect
-
@Brock Agree with you. I didn't dry mine, but my washer has an extra hot setting. That made it shrink quite a bit without drying. It especially narrowed the arms a lot and brought the length up a quite a bit but not enough for my liking. @Blanco I also found them to be a bit long. I took both my indigo and black sashiko shirt to the tailor and had them shortened a bit. Just my two cents. I have pictures from much further up of before and after too if you care to see how just an extra hot wash worked. I took it out right before the spin cycle.
-
I would wash it on hot. Pull some measurements on it and see where it’s at. Maybe dry it for 15 to 20 minutes on high, then pull it out and check it again. Hang dry it for a bit and either finish it off in the dryer or just leave it hanging.
The only caveat to all that is it’s hard to tell but if your chest which looks like the best fitting part doesn’t feel like you can shrink up to an inch or so I’d be hesitant to do above..
Also, take all this with the grain salt as I’m working out in the gym at the moment lol
Edit: looks like you have plenty of material up under the armpits for shrink
-
@northsouthdenimguy yeah the chest is deceiving as it looks fine but it almost 24.5" measuring the IH way and I can go down as low as 23.5" easily. Meant to ask before did you experience any color loss? It looks like maybe a little from your before and after pics but could also be the lighting.
@talexander for my use I'm not quite to the point where I want to go to a tailor but it's probably more I don't have one I know is good and not sure I want to give them a $425 shirt to find out.
-
I noticed the same thing, I think it’s just the lighting. It does not look any lighter in person.

A little peak from live feed

Good luck everyone. To arms!!
