Yeah I’ve spent the last hour looking at meindl clothing and the tanning processes.

So, it started black and turned dark brown over time? It's a lovely color.

The dye is painted onto the surface of the hide, it wears off over time to reveal the underlying colour.  It's a similar process to what happens with tea-core leathers…
