    @Chris:

I hate those long date windows.  If today is the 8th, I'm pretty sure I can figure out that yesterday was the 7th and tomorrow is the 9th all by myself.  And if they're going to try and make some sort of design argument in its favor, then I'd like to see a better, more balanced looking watch face.

Along the same lines, I don't get (other than horological value) why they put the year on watches.  "Ohhhh it's 2013 still?!?!?"

I prefer the long date windows to the traditional square ones, but I'd rather have a watch without one.

Blancpain have finally got the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe out. I saw it in Harrods this evening, and it looks a look better in reality than in the photos. It's a bit shinier than I expected, but a simpler and more modern piece of industrial design than the existing model.

I prefer it, and would rather save the £3000 or so off the RRP over its big brother. Particularly when both have the same movement.

Still, for Giles, here's an extra-blingy Fifty Fathoms.

I'd gone into Harrods as I wanted to take a look at the Zenith Pilot GMT. There's a Wright Brothers edition coming next year with a Bund strap, and I was curious to see how big the standard model is. Quite is the answer.

Lastly, the man in the Hermes concierge was keen to show off the In The Pocket, an ultra limited edition pocket watch with wrist strap. It's one of my favourite pieces, but at £25K it's not going to happen…

A Christmas gift arrived today from Singapore (can't find these in the US).

Now looking at the picture, that's the Japanese character for someday(?). Better set the day back to English.

Not answering for Seth but I'm pretty sure it's a Citizen NY0040 which for a short time was an issued piece.

reminds me a lot of the seiko S007…which is a good thing! great watch mate.

how would you guys compare the two (seiko and citizen)? anyone with personal experience maybe...

Thanks guys, I'm really happy with it.

                            It's a Citizen Promaster NY0040-09E.

It's 200 m water resistant, automatic movement, screw down crown, rotating bezel, day/date, and as you see the day can be set to English, or what I assume is Japanese. I particularly like the offset crown at 8:00.

I got it brand new from ebay for $142 shipped, but they only come from Asia (Singapore, Hongkong, etc), so shipping can take several weeks and your home country may charge customs fees. I was not charged anything extra in the US.

Similar idea as the Seiko you mention, the SKX007, but lesser known and a slightly better value. They also have a model with a white face.

really hesitating between these two now…looks like the seiko is a tad bigger (what i like), but i really like the offset crown of the citizen! hmmmmmmmm...

btw. just found a nice page for seiko watches (and some modifications you can do to'em and all):

For all it's worth, you can hand wind the Citizen, but not the Seiko.

^so your vote would be the citizen?

just checked through some watch forums and there they recommend to just get both in the end…best of both worlds i'd say 😃

might not be for everyday use, but here another beauty, the Seiko skx011…

It's coincidental you should be drawn to the SKX011 in stainless.

I was looking at almost exactly that model, but with a rubber band and orange face as another strong contender.

I checked all the watch forums, youtube video comparisons, etc., and functionally, the citizen and seiko divers are so similar, it just comes down to design preference. The citizen is slightly smaller so that's a little better for my wrist.

Unless of course you want to mod the watch. There's a huge mod'ing community, and parts, for the seikos.

Maybe next Christmas I get the orange face / black band. The yellow face / black band version is also nice.

yeah the skx011 really is a beauty…atm. i'm going through the page i've posted above.
thinking about a skx007 with a red seconds hand and saphire glass. should look like this in the end:

As someone with a watch with the crown at 8, I'd recommend the Seiko.  Unless you're left handed, the 8 crown position is kind of awkward.
