Yesterday was my birthday and my parents happened to be in town so we went to Olamaie.
It was recently voted the best restaurant in Austin, and the cuisine is basically refined southern food.
Now conceptually I have a problem with this, as I grew up in Atlanta when I was younger and I find that fine dining and southern comfort food just do not go hand in hand. Boy was I wrong!
Started off with some appetizers. This was the pole bean and radish salad.
This dish was boiled peanuts, buttermilk, honey mustard and lambs quarter.
Carolina gold rice hush puppies, ham, charred garlic and chive.
Texas Red Royal shrimp with farrow. This had some Tabasco that gave it a nice kick. Probably my favorite of the first courses. The shrimp just melted in your mouth.
For my main course I got the bone in pork chop which featured some persimmon, field peas and shishito. Great flavors and balance of acidity.
For dessert we had a few selections as well.
The one that stood out was the zucchini bread glazed in sorghum.
Spiced apple custard with shortbread bread crumble, great for fall.
And they brought me a little chocolate cherry birthday cake with ice cream that was delicious too!
All in all, if you ever find yourself in Austin and you need to celebrate something go to Olamaie. I've eaten at quite a few nice restaurants here and this might just be my favorite overall experience. From the service to the food, everything was top notch. Everything else I eat in Austin will be compared to Olamaie!

Damn…. looks very, very tasty. What’s the deal with those Carolina hush puppies?
Curious about that myself. These are made with rice?
