IH-1955S-142 - 14oz Selvedge Denim "1955" Vintage Tapered Cut Jeans - Indigo
-
Im seriously thinking about picking up a pair of these from self edge, online. The thing that is giving me pause is the sizing.
I have a number of 888 pairs, including the 142s. This fit generally does well for me, but I’ve always wished that the front rise on it was even higher. I’ve worn a size 30 but have recently bought a few pairs in 31 and find them a bit more comfortable for me.
I bought a 1955 21oz when they released in a size 30 and they were just a little too big for me in general. Part of it was the cut, part of it was that I might have been able to size down because they sit so high. I can tolerate a tighter waist in a high rise Jean.
For reference, I recently bought a STF The Flat Head 3004, similar cut to the 1955, which after shrinking has about a 12” rise and inch smaller waist than most of my other denim. And they are extremely comfortable.
Do you guys think I might be able to pull off a 29 in this? I know it’s an impossible to answer question, and I know that this material doesn’t stretch as much as the 21 oz flagship does. I may order but not have them hem so I can return if necessary.
For clarity, I’m considering sizing down to make some of the other dimensions beyond the waist just a tad smaller than what I experienced with the 1955 21oz. I realize the dimensions aren’t exactly the same.
Thanks!

^ I have the 1955 in 21 and 14oz and they fit similarly. While the 21 has more than a little give/stretch, I'd say the 14 will also give with waist pressure. If the 21 is too big, than go size 29. If you're happy with the fit, then 30.
Most important, however, are the measurements -- trust those and ask your AD for what you need. Obvious, but true

Wearing my pair for the first time today, it's my first experience with the 1955 cut and it's an absolutely exceptional cut. I love the high rise, as I have very short legs, and the slight taper is exactly what I want in a pair nowadays. I'll post some pics in a few days when I get a chance.
This will probably end up being my new cut, switching from 888. Hoping we see the ducks in this cut, as my 888D are my favorite pants I've ever owned, so I suspect that 1955D would actually cause me to die and ascend to heaven.

Here's a fit with the my new pair!

Really loving that the taper doesn't start right at the hip, since it works better for the shape of my leg.
For anyone that cares, here's some measurements. I always wash before the first wear. These are tag 33, I'm 5'11'' and 170lbs.
Pre-wash: waist 16.75 inseam 30.5
Post-wash: waist 16.5 inseam 30.25
After 2 wears: waist 16.9 inseam 30.25The little bit of stretch I'm seeing makes me think I probably could have gone for a 32 but they weren't in stock and I felt like a little bit of extra space is good since I like to tuck in.

Which fit is similar to 1955? (I’m leaning towards 888).
-
@michael.rose0107 888 is the most similar. You can use IH’s “compare” tool on their website to see the difference.
-
@michael.rose0107. I don't think any cut is similar to 1955. You can find similarities in all cuts if you look for it. I mean the only thing remotely similar to the 888 is maybe the higher rise although the 1955 has higher front rise. From crotch to knee is more 634 and knee to hem more 633. So go figure.
-
@yannis Yeah, thats what I thought. I’m wanting the indigo/black; however it’s currently not available in 1955.
-
@michael.rose0107 . Is the 1955 the only cut you get along with? I am assuming you looking at the 25oz ib denim that comes in every other cut but the 1955. If the high rise is not extremely important to you the 634 or the 888 will do you right. The 888 has more taper and smaller knee measurements and the 634 is a classic straight fit
-
@yannis My first pair was IH-634S, it feels snug in the thigh. Later I bought IH-634D and I sized up and it fits better however I think the canvas is giving it more structure. I decided to try 1955 and currently breaking it in.
-
If you want Ib sizing up on 634 maybe your play. The 25oz is will also feel structured. Its heavier and stiffer than the 21oz. The 888 will taper pretty meaningfully from mid thigh to knee so it will feel tighter from about 3 inches down the crotch to knee than the 634.

@yannis Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it!
