I for one am absolutely fucking delighted that he has done this. Just because it has not been done before, does not mean he should not try. Haraki pushes the envelope and more often than not, others follow. We all know that we have released stuff that does not sell, only to see other brands selling it like hot cakes a few years later......

When Haraki does these side projects, does he have a team close by that mocks them up so that he can oversee them personally making tweaks to the design as it's being put together? What happens to the mock up's that don't come to fruition?

Oh, and when he showed me the IH-805 sample, I thought he had been smoking something a stronger that his normal Marlborough Menthols. But he made them anyway, no retailers took any from the initial run, and they sold like absolute crap, then (with the help of the @madmike effect), they took on a life of their own, and basically we cant make enough of any fabric iteration.....

I would not call it a side project. Doing stuff like this IS what he does. He'll spec it and then send it off to be sampled, he'll get it back and make any changes he feels are necessary, and repeat until he is happy enough to either take to production, or assign it to his "stuff that never quite made it but may one day" rail on the mez in Hachioji.
And even then, he will not stop tweaking, the IHJ-79 has been through a few iterations, as has the mountain parka....
