Seeing as there are a few posts about triathlon but no topic, here we go.

Today did some training for the Huntsman Triathlon in the New Forest (UK). This'll be my first event. Intended to to approximate the race at site but weather was awful, so did the swim in the actual lake only. Had some gear issues: swim socks falling off, goggles strap ripped. Then came home to bike on zwift and did the distance with added 600 meters elevation. Followed that by a run outside in the rain and wind. Hoping for better weather at the event in a couple weeks, but pleased as this is the first time I've tried all three disciplines and it went ok. Looking forward to hearing about others' pursuits.

I think @cander49 and @Brock do this kind of thing. Great thread, hope to read and learn about this. The only insight I have into it is via an ex-girlfriend from way back who used to do the Iron Man thing. It seems like lunacy to me and something I'd be awful at, but I have enormous respect for those that do it, or are intending to.

Good call to do a dress rehearsal and get your gear issues out of the way. Nothing sucks like equipment failures during a race.

I'm not a tri guy, primarily because I just don't like biking, but the swim/run portion has always appealed to me. I'll be following any updates you feel like sharing.  Oh yeah- good luck in the Huntsman.

I'm afraid I don't bike or swim! Running alone is enough for me!  😃

I did Ironman UK a few years ago - came at it as a complete novice in all 3 events, but loved the process of focusing on something for the best part of 9 months. It wasn't pretty but I got round OK.

I'd like to have another go at some point and fix all the rookie mistakes I made. Main one would be spending more time on the bike. Makes sense when you think about it as this is there you'll spend the majority of your time on the day

The only thing you can't really prepare for is the mass swim start. Being kicked in the head from every direction is, umm, interesting :p

Last big training day one week before the event next Sunday. Did swim, bike, and run today of same distance as race, but with much less effort than I’ll put in next week. Will have a light week of training to get fresh. Mostly that’ll mean base pace with a bit of race level efforts to get the body used to the specific feel. Conventional wisdom is a longer taper but I’m looking at this Olympic distance race as just more training for the longer 70.3 I’m doing in august. Trying to get my head around transitions, which will be tricky in the cold. Really looking forward to the challenge.

Attempted standard distance triathlon (swim 1.1k/.68m, bike 33k/20m, run 10k/6m) in the New Forest yesterday. Swim went well, water temp was up to 15/59 so with wetsuit felt good. First transition took a bit longer than expected as air temp dropped to 7/44 and fingers and toes were numb, so putting on socks and shoes was interesting… but I looked up at the sky and there was still a bit of sun poking through the clouds so I thought I would be ok in sleeveless trisuit as it was 7:45am and thought it would warm up. Then got on the bike and felt pretty solid for about half an hour until the rain and wind hit. Arms felt cold first, so was trying to keep them dry but the rain meant this was a losing battle. Then tried going faster and standing up on the bike to get more blood flowing but eventually the cold got the best of me. I started shivering and felt like I was not in control of the bike. I had to flag down a car for help. A really kind dog-walker with three rescue greyhounds gave me her tea and drove me back to the start of the race. She stashed my bike in the bushes and luckily it was there when I went back for it. Lessons learned: always be prepared for bad weather and schedule races for later in the summer. On the bright side, I'm booked for another triathlon at the same venue in August so will have another chance. Looking forward to that.

Hit a peak today training for an upcoming standard distance triathlon in the New Forest. The event is in three weeks so went and did the routes of each discipline as closely to the race as possible. Pleased with what I was able to achieve since this is almost the same course as the event I did not finish in May. Today's overall time of around 2 hours 30 (I didn't time transitions) is a benchmark to try and beat in the event. The last three weeks training will get more specific, meaning working at race pace and doing sessions with bike after swim and run after bike, but at the same time lower the volume to gain some freshness.

Managed to complete my first triathlon on Sunday. Olympic distance (1100 meter swim, 33k bike, 10k run) in the same area where I attempted a race in May and did not finish because of hypothermia. Very pleased then to go ten mins faster than my goal and end up in 18th place out of over 130 participants. Weather was great, the whole thing went by super quickly. There was a bit of jostling and bumping on the swim, and then a 1k run from swim exit to bike, but bike felt great and my foot injury stayed away for the run. Looking forward to going for longer distance next summer. Will at least go for middle distance/70.3, and maybe Ironman.
A few race photos, my favourite is the person in the car.
