@Alextucker > Here is the full, official Iron Heart wash guide for UHR denim:

                “ULTRA HEAVY RAW (UHR) DENIM

An initial soak or wash is particularly important with this denim, as it is very stiff and abrasive in its raw state, so can cut through the constructional stitching if not bedded in. The denim is loom-state (there has been no post weave processing performed on the denim), so it will shrink and skew. Our UHR jeans are designed to be “shrink to fit”, so after washing or soaking a couple of times they will shrink to tag size. You are likely to see about one inch shrinkage in the waist and two inches shrinkage in the inseam. When you get your jeans, soak them in a bathtub or large sink of cold water for a few hours. Then turn them inside-out and wash them in a washing machine* at no hotter than 30 degrees C (circa 90 degrees F), you do not need to add washing powder or detergent. Ideally no spin (or very slow spin) and don’t put them in a tumble dryer, it is far better to allow them to air dry (still inside-out). Before they are completely dry, turn right side out and try to smooth out all the wrinkles.”

@goosehd Thank for this! I just wanted to clarify as I am new to this denim. The text in the post says to soak in cold water for a few hours. The text from the link says to do the initial soak in hot water. I am assuming hot water is the way to initially soak these as to get as much of the shrink out.

Just wanted to check since mine arrive today and want to start the process as soon as I get them.

@Nobunaga the temperature of the water is not as important as the agitation. It’s the agitation that will shrink the denim. I always tend to use hot water but you can use what you’re comfortable with.

I soaked mine twice in warm water, sun dried between then rinsed in the machine as per instructions and they shrunk perfectly, nearly a full waist size and an inch+ in length. Such awesome denim, love the blue colour in contrast to my other 21oz pairs, these are gonna age and wear so nicely.

As this is my first go around with UHR, would it be prudent to warm-ish soak, skip washing and then hang dry to take it easy on shrinkage out the gate? Then if they're too big after round one, do it again? Pretty sure I've got sizing right but don't want to overshoot and end up with something too small.

I own too many pairs of jeans.

@Pointman you really need to embed the stitching by properly shrinking them the first time. Not doing so could possibly cause premature blowout otherwise.

You can try your method, but I would shrink them…

@Pointman in my experience with UHR the waist stretches back out to pre soak measurements and in some cases beyond. that seems to be the case for a lot of people's UHR experience. if they fit good before the soak/wash, they'll fit good after. pending a day or two of wear.

@indigo_nico yeah agreed it stretches. Plus i feel washing it in the machine with proper agitation all of the shrinkage comes out uniformally as well, dont feel the need to baby it. Just soak it thoroughly and chuck it in. For one of my pairs i did 55c degrees and it didnt shrink enough. But i found with the washing machine and agitation it got it to where i wanted....

Best to get the shrinkage out the way before you start wearing them heavily... It can mess up your fades too down the line. God I must have read over 3000 posts on UHR when I got my 634s/888's, the last few posts in this thread alone are golden.

Hello I have a question concerning the UHR fabric.......if the back rise measurements are 15.6 inches before hot soaking and washing them how much length could I possibly lose in the back rise after doing so?

@Goz I’m tagging @ShopatIronHeart as I don’t know if it’s been recorded…probably has and I just need to do some research. The general guideline is an inch in the waist and up to 2 inches in the length. Everything else would be proportional (with no exact’s known for thigh, inseam, knee, hem, etc.)

I believe there are a few people with their own information and I will see if I can find it.

@Goz Actually, going back to the beginning of the thread, a few people have seen .3 and .4 inch shrinkage which would have been my assumption. However as each run of denim may slightly be different in how it behaves, that would be for that run and this one could be slightly different.

My gut says up to .5 inches…
