Overall, I like the idea of an all gold watch. I’ve been looking at them for years, but I just don’t think I’d wear one enough on the bracelet. A black NATO kind of tones it down and makes it a lot more wearable to me. I’d love to find either a 1680 nipple dial or an ‘80s to early ‘90s 16618. I’d even buy a head-only if the price made sense, but every time I look, the difference between a head-only and a complete watch just isn’t enough. At that point, I’d rather have the bracelet too.

The other thing that gives me pause is all the Franken watches out there. I’m pretty hesitant to drop $25k+- on one unless it has really solid provenance or is coming from a dealer I trust.

@northsouthdenimguy love the look of the strap with the watch! I originally had been looking at the two tone version and the dealer phoned me to let me know it was in…I tried on both the two tone and the version I have now and immediately knew which one I wanted. It’s not an everyday watch for me, but something I enjoy rotating once in a while.

You’ll know when you see the watch you want and the time is right…I wasn’t looking and it found me. The same will happen to you 🙂

@northsouthdenimguy You're right, vintage is a minefield. And you have to do your own die diligence as the dealers (every one I've seen) either don't know enough, or don't disclose everything.

The black and gold 1680 Sub looks amazing.

I saw an IWC Venturer in Melbourne a couple of months ago, and I quite liked it. It's very different, but that's the appeal. Besides, how many people (other than @Giles) actually wear their diver's or pilot's watch for what they're intended.

If you want something a bit more traditional, Blancpain has just released a new Bathyscaphe. Details at Monochrome.

I really wish Blancpain would do another issue/reissue of the no rad or the version with the moisture indicator and no date. If they did that I would buy one in a heartbeat.

@goosehd Blancpain used to do a couple of limited editions each year, and these tended to have a retro or reissue theme. The No Rad or Milspec (moisture indicator) models were examples of these.

They haven't produced one for a while, the Bathyscaphe I mentioned above is the first in a long time. Maybe you'll be in luck in the near future.
