This situation brings up an interesting question:  Should you hem pre- or post-soak?

    I'm leaning towards pre-soak.
Since I have to send them away, I have to fold them, and then they will be folded again on the return shipment.
I don't want to have fades on the fold lines while they're sitting in the box

What do you think?  I'm pretty sure about the hem length with 2-2.5" shrinkage, so I'm only concerned with the fold lines during shipping.  I think they will ship better pre-soak?  Does this seem reasonable?

I'd do it post soak so you know how much you want off.  If you do it pre soak, you're just guessing…

Also, they don't shrink that much.  Mine were Japanese length, so I think 35 (someone correct me if I'm wrong).  After 9 months they're 34.5

always hem POST-soak id say… you never know how many inches the denims REALLY gonna shrink...so yeah. post-soak would be you savest bet!

dont worry about the fades during folding, cuz there will be non! if there are still some foldmarks visible, dont very cuz they will fade away with wear anyway ;)...

          Post-soak it is.
I worry too much so I don't worry too little…

                I was just wondering….

what kind of shrinkage is there to be expected if I do very hot soak in thigh and hem width?

My annies are soaked once and one delicate cycle in 40°C, no spinning.  I didn't get any shrinkage, I think,  widthwise and just barely something in lenght....

Anybody washed these in 60°C??  (I know, I'm crazy)

I think gbougard accidently washed a pair at that temp, not sure though.

Giles, is there a technical reason behind that decision (like: its easier to hem unsanf. denim if it hasn't skewed yet)?
Or is it because you're the boss-man and have a Union Special under your control!?!

Because I like the roping be accentuated in the first soak/wash.  If you take the shrinkage out first, you will lessen the roping….G

I asked the same question when i got mine, pre or post hemming…took Giles' advice,pre..and they shrunk to the perfect length with roping.

I put mine in near boiling water (not the tag though) and the waist went from 30 to 27-28.  It stretched back to 30 thankfully
